a cryptic new species

Cool discovery in Canadian waters

So when do you know you’ve discovered a new species? Invertebrates expert Dr. Jean-Marc Gagnon collected a deep-sea, giant file clam 30 years ago off Canada’s Atlantic coast (with the help of the hydraulic arm of a submersible). In recent years, he's collaborated with colleagues from Fisheries and Oceans Canada, reexamining the clam and realizing that it's not what he’d originally thought it was.

Nature for young minds

TD renews support for Nature Express

We’re pleased to report that TD Friends of the Environment is again supporting the Museum's Nature Express program. This funding enables students from certain schools facing financial obstacles to visit the Museum and attend a curriculum-linked education program. Since its inception in 2012, Nature Express has benefitted 3,000 school children, connecting young minds with the wonders of the natural world. Wrote one teacher: "many of our students never get an opportunity to step outside of their world and you have allowed them to do so. Thanks again to you and all your staff.”
