Dojo Izakaya for Late Night

A casual and cozy spin-off of Sushi Dojo (one of my favorite go-to sushi spots in NYC) introduces Dojo Izakaya -- a small restaurant offering a simple and unique selection of vegetables, seafood and meat cooked in the Japanese tradition. Under low lighting in an intimate space, it's the perfect spot for groups to meet for late night drinks -- and food that pairs perfectly with it. Feels like the owners' living room, and you get so comfortable you don't want to leave.

Izakaya literally means "stay sake shop" -- a Japanese 'pub'. In Japan, it is a place that offers a selection of food that pairs perfectly with drinks, and is perfect for social gatherings with friends or colleagues. It's a fun way to eat, as you can spread the dishes out throughout the night in a journey of food that pairs with your drink of choice. The sakes were interested and fun, and very approachable.

We had a bit of everything on the menu, and every bite was good! The standouts were the Oshinko (Japanese pickles that were quite refreshing, especially in summer time); Gobo Chips (fried burdock roots with spicy cod mayo that I am literally still thinking about as I write this...these could replace french fries for me); and the Katsu Sando (pork cutlet sandwich which tasted like a more sophisticated club sandwich and just perfect for late night food). We didn't get to try the Hamburg Steak, and now I will have to come back for that as the weather cools because it sounds delicious. Dessert isn't on the menu, but between the friendly service, plentiful drink and sake menu, and great music selection, you don't need it.

Great place, if you can find a seat, grab it immediately!
