We are still a few days away from Apple’s big annual fall press event, where the tech giant is expected to unveil its next generation iPhone lineup. And although nothing is official, the world already referring to the next models as the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus.

This doesn’t bode well for digital marketing agency 6S Marketing.

The agency has embarked a bit of a guerrilla marketing campaign of its own – asking Apple to please consider naming the device the iPhone 7.

They even went as far as to rent out a billboard in the middle of Times Square to spread their message: We had the name first.

They also parked a mobile ad truck with the message outside the Apple Store on Fifth Avenue for good measure.

“When the 4s came out we kind of made a joke like, wouldn’t it be funny if they made a 6s, and then kind of forgot about it,” Chris Breikss, president and co-founder of 6S Marketing, told Global News.

“More recently we noticed a huge dip in our search traffic coming from Google, as the rumours about an iPhone 6s came out.”

The company, which was founded in Vancouver in 2000, chose the name because it sounds like “success.” And it’s done well for them – the agency has offices in Toronto, Vancouver and New York and has done campaigns for Mountain Equipment Co-op and Cirque Du Soleil in China.

Of course, the agency is using the coincidence an opportunity to get their name out there – but who can blame them, they are a marketing company afterall.

But will they really be mad if Apple uses the name “6s”?

“I don’t think we’re going to be mad – you know, it’s like your mom saying, ‘I’m not mad, I’m disappointed,’” Breikss said.

“We’re big fans of Apple products and the reality is, I don’t think our advertising agency is even a blip on Apple’s radar. We know that they are going to be talking about the next iPhone soon anyway.”
