The weekend’s nearly arrived and all you want to do after a hectic week at the office is kick back in front of the TV with a takeaway and a bottle of wine and do absolutely zilch. We hear ya.

But it may be worth your while to do something a little more productive, as unfinished tasks and nagging to-dos have been proven to affect your energy levels and happiness. As The Happiness Project author Gretchen Rubin explains, these are the tasks that weigh on your mind and zap your energy.

With that in mind, we’ve found four ways to get your life in order this weekend, so you can start next week afresh.

1. Make a plan

Is there anything more exhilarating than setting a goal and accomplishing it? If you’ve been putting this off, grab yourself a journal, and pinpoint the areas in your life that you think need improvement. What would you like to change? Putting your thoughts on to paper is actually a lot more helpful than you might think. Write down a goal and then formulate a plan on how you’re going to get there. Remember: small goals, equal big results.

2. Update your CV

Whether you’re job hunting, considering a career change or in a job you love, there can be a lot to be gained from updating your CV. Outlining your skill-set and credentials will give you a major confidence boost, and updating your CV as you go is a much less arduous task than hastily trying to remember what date you started that waitressing job six years ago, before your next interview. Set aside an hour this weekend to add in all your new achievements, for a quick confidence pick-me-up.

3. Open a savings account

A lot of the time, our worries and stresses are finance-related, and that can make for a major energy drain. Take out that journal again and write down your necessary, and unnecessary weekly expenditures, and schedule in a time to set up a savings account, too. Plan to put aside some cash every time you get paid, and before you know it, you’ll be able to start buying all those lovely things you’re lusting after.

4. Spring clean your wardrobe

A study at Princeton University found that clutter really does affect our energy and happiness levels. According to researchers “Multiple stimuli present in the visual field at the same time compete for neural representation by mutually suppressing their evoked activity throughout visual cortex, providing a neural correlate for the limited processing capacity of the visual system.” In other words, that overstuffed wardrobe really is affecting how you feel. Grab a bin bag and take full afternoon to tackle your clutter. Rule number one? Be ruthless!
