A Review Of CSUB's Trip To Costa Rica

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—The CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team traveled to Costa Rica for a tour of the country from Aug. 21-27. During the trip, the Roadrunners came away victorious in each of three games played against native competition.

On Aug. 23, CSUB defeated a local team, Coronado, 81-40. Addi Walters led all scorers with 21 points. The freshman from San Francisco went 7-of-11 from three-point range in only 23 minutes of action. Senior guard Alyssa Shannon scored 10 points and dished out a game high six assists while another freshman guard, Alexxus Gilbert, added 10 points.

CSUB held Coronado to 26.7% shooting (12-for-45) and forced 27 turnovers. Shannon had three of the 14 Roadrunner steals. CSUB outrebounded Coronado 35-24.

The following day began a two-game series against Costa Rica's national team. In the opener, the Roadrunners came away with a 77-53 victory. The game was close as CSUB led 31-29 at halftime and 50-45 after the third quarter. The Roadrunners closed it out with 27-8 fourth quarter to win by 24.

Walters led the team in scoring with 19 points. She was 7-of-12 from the field and 5-of-8 from three-point range. Batabe Zemapare tallied a double-double of 15 points and 15 rebounds. While Gilbert and sophomore transfer Tylinn Carter each scored 10 points.

The Roadrunners' bench outscored their counterparts 30-9. CSUB forced 26 turnovers and made 13 steals. The 'Runners outrebounded the national team 49-27.

The tour concluded with a 83-46 victory over the national team.  CSUB led 40-25 at halftime and never looked back. Walters again led the Roadrunners as the 5-9 pre-law major scored 20 points. Junior center Brittany Sims scored 12 points while Gilbert added 11.

The CSUB depth again played a big part, scoring 51 of the 83 'Runner points. The Costa Rica national team's bench only scored 20 points. The Roadrunners turned up the defense forcing 36 turnovers and made 16 steals.

The Roadrunners conducted a youth clinic on Aug. 24. The clinic for children that lived in San Jose, Costa Rica aged 10-16. The team took a sightseeing tour of the Britt Coffee Plantation as well as tour of San Jose. The trip was capped off by a zip line tour at Vista Los Suenos.

“I would like to thank our donor, Mr. George Martin, for giving the CSUB Women's Basketball Program a great experience,” said CSUB head coach Greg McCall. “The players and coaches had an opportunity for team bonding, educational training about another country and their culture, as well as, playing three days of great basketball.  I thought the team played hard and did a good job of playing well together.”
