This is a great cafe, definitely the best traditional cafe in central Alameda. First, the coffee is truly delicious, and it is reasonably priced (and a dollar for a refill). Additionally, we love the menu items, especially the avocado toast and breakfast options.
There are a good cross section of people gathered here, and it always feels like a real hub for downtown. Other cafes nearby are either chains, or a little more niche. This feels homey, with high ceilings, an historic building, wooden floors, and diverse clientele.
We've been here in many different capacities over the past few years and find The Local is a great place to meet up with friends, do some work from home (ample outlets), take your kid (lots of books for them at the counter), study, or spend a bit of time while on Park St.
It's always clean, well lit, with ample seating-- and the pastries are always fresh. They used to have a happy hour in the afternoon, not sure if that is still the case. The excellent wifi is a plus. The owners and counter staff are friendly and gracious, and it makes it a lovely and welcoming place to be. Just wish they would be open later! Thank you Local!Helpful 0Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 0Dec 8, 2023Previous reviewReally great coffee, wonderful high ceilings and tables with outlets galore. We always enjoy coming to this warm and welcoming cafe-- a true Alameda staple.

Local coffee shop on Park st in downtown Alameda
I'm writing mostly because of the layout and ambience - I love the long community tables and the open yet darkish study hall feel which reminds me a bit of old English libraries for some reason. Not sure how old the furniture is but I probably wouldn't camp out there in my best outfits.
Just got coffee here to go which comes in a smaller
than expected sized cup.Helpful 1Thanks 2Love this 0Oh no 1 - Dec 30, 20231 check-in
I am a big matcha fan and this place might be best matcha I've ever had!
Loved how it was hot and not warm when served and just right amount of sweetness where it wasnt so bitter or too sweet.
The food was good too! Andouille sausage wrap & Breakfast croissant
Loved how cozy the cafe was indoor and decorated for Christmas, just hard to find parking ):Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Feb 17, 2024
Coffee was made so quick! I got the Taro latte and really enjoyed it. Was creamy and hot, perfect for a cold day! I definitely will be back, there's such a large space with seating, perfect for food and coffee to spend some time or catch up with a friend. They have wifi as well, so may come again when needing to do a work meeting.

Tried this place on a Wednesday morning where I wanted to get a coffee from a place with outdoor seating (we brought the dog)!
This place is on Park St in Alameda so it's in a pretty busy area. Parking is street parking or paid lot parking.
There is a ton of outdoor seating as the street next to the cafe has outdoor tables.
We tried an iced matcha latte and an iced Mexican hot chocolate! Both drinks were so so good! They were about $6 each. I appreciated how when we dined in the cafe we were able to use real glasses and compostable straws.
The chocolate croissant was obviously not fresh, but it was decent! Minus one star as their pastry selection was not fresh nor very exciting.
This is a great cafe to sit and chat at - free WiFi and tons of seating!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 20434202963Apr 7, 2023
Come for the coffee, stay for the vibes ~ if you're working/studying that is.
My family and I stopped by The Local for a weekend morning coffee. They have so many options. Besides the regular menu, they also have a few other written menus that show other drink options.
I went with the Neptune - a frappe with double espresso, half & half, chocolate, vanilla, and banana. Except I opted to get it without chocolate. It was a good frappe, but I expected more of a banana flavor. Overall, it just tasted like a regular coffee frappe with a subtle banana syrup. Price wise, I'd also say it's more expensive than it's worth.
The looks like an awesome space to work though! Lots of tables and couches to study. If working isn't what you want to do, they also have lots of games and books to borrow while you're there.Helpful 6Thanks 1Love this 4Oh no 1 - Apr 24, 2023
I guess I need to get out more and grade essays at coffee shops! In addition to Wi-Fi and plugs, this place has coffee and adult beverages ranging from canned beer to in-house-made mimosas. Yes, grading went smoothly once I ordered my beverage of choice. I will let you figure out what I ordered to drink!
This place on Sunday is not crowded, for there's a decent amount of places to nest and get work done or chat quietly with a friend. There are books and board games if you get bored or need a mental break. Cool little addition!
Overall, I was more than pleased with this place! This place is teacher-approved!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 1 - 1166113Jun 4, 2023
Very friendly staff.
The place was filled with people and music from a local artist. The vibe was as if a coffee shop and a diner had a baby.

A vast choice of frock is food and drinks. Ample space to sit - I somehow always find it a tad noisy and not super clean but I will always come to eat here for the quality of the food

Service is efficient and courteous- the ambiance is calm, relaxing and welcoming. Comfy chairs in the windows and plenty other sitting arrangements to fit all moods and purpose.
