Carlson named Tamarac Volunteer of Year

Connie Carlson, Rochert, Minn., was named the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge's 2015 Volunteer of the Year Award.

Carlson began volunteering in 2007 as a visitor center host. Over the years, she has helped plan and staff events including Tamarac's Annual Fall Festival, the Holiday Open House, Detroit Lakes (Minn.) Festival of Birds, Tamarac's "Nature Nerd" activity booth at the county fair and more.

She is a retired teacher and a certified Minnesota Master Naturalist. Carlson has led public interpretive programs and has also presented activities for Boys and Girls Club, home school students and Head Start children. In 2014, she became Tamarac's "Wild Wednesdays" coordinator, a summer program geared for preschoolers that allows children to explore nature through stories, hikes, crafts and music. Carlson donated more than 500 hours of service to the refuge this past year.

Awards were also presented to volunteers who had reached key milestones. Mark Geihl, Denise Warweg, Sandie Boyer, Susan Wilson and Ken Mattson all received the Assistant Regional Director's Award for 500 hours of service. Lois Brantner and Del Bergseth received the Regional Director's Award for 1,000 hours of service.

Sanford, F-M Ambulance earn Lifeline awards

Sanford Heart Hospital, Fargo, has received the Mission: Lifeline Receiving Center Gold level award for implementing specific quality improvement measures outlined by the American Heart Association for the treatment of patients who suffer severe heart attacks.

Sanford Heart Hospital has maintained the gold achievement performance level for two consecutive years.

F-M Ambulance, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sanford Health Systems, received the Mission: Lifeline EMS Gold Receiving award, which recognizes emergency responders for their efforts in improving systems of care and improving the quality of life for patients suffering severe heart attacks.

Bold & Blue club elects officers

Cheri Reum, a member of the Bold & Blue Toastmasters Club in Fargo, was elected president of the club.

Other newly elected officers are Nancy Thiery, vice president of education; Pamela Rogers, vice president membership; Shelly Axtman, vice president public relations; Maggie Abraham, secretary; Duane Eckholm, treasurer; and Carole Galster, sergeant at arms.

Spitfire named champ at Nebraska event

The competition barbecue team from Spitfire Bar & Grill, West Fargo, was named the grand champion of the 23rd Annual State BBQ Championship of Nebraska held recently in Omaha.

The team, led by chief cook Tim Olson, competed against 41 other teams in the Kansas City Barbecue Society-sanctioned contest.

Spitfire placed first in overall points, first in the beef brisket category and second in the chicken and pork categories.

Kennelly O'Keeffe attorneys honored

Five attorneys with the Kennelly O'Keeffe law firm of Fargo were honored by the Super Lawyers organization for 2015.

Dean Rindy, real estate law, and Tatum Lindbo, criminal defense and personal injury, were named 2015 Super Lawyers.

Named as Rising Stars for 2015 by the Super Lawyers organization are: Tracy Lyson, family law; Sean Foss, commercial and general litigation; and Stephen Welle, criminal defense and civil litigation.

Super Lawyers recognizes attorneys who have distinguished themselves in their legal practice areas. The honor is arrived at through a process of independent research, peer nominations and peer review.

Three named to ShareHouse board

ShareHouse, Fargo, has named Jim Austin, Jon Swegarden and the Rev. John Roberts to its board of directors.

Austin earned a bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism from University of North Dakota, Grand Forks. He worked at KXJB in the 1960s and was on the staff of a U.S. congressman, a U.S. senator, and was a Washington lobbyist for a number of companies before returning to North Dakota and working in the insurance industry.

Swegarden graduated from North Dakota State University and Mount Marty College with a bachelor's degree in respiratory therapy. His other education includes Sleep Innovation Inc. and the University of Southern California University Hospital. He currently is president of 12th Avenue Business Park Condo Association, managing partner of Sweboe Storage Systems and vice president of Polyair.

Roberts is an ordained United Methodist pastor who has served a variety of congregations since 1980 in Minnesota, West Virginia and North Dakota. He spent three years as the shelter operations director at Churches United for the Homeless in Moorhead. Currently, he is a pastor at Recovery Worship, a congregation for persons whose lives have been impacted by addiction.

Dorsey & Whitney attorney named to Best Lawyers list

Sarah Andrews Herman of the Dorsey & Whitney law firm, Fargo, was selected for inclusion in the 22nd Edition of The Best Lawyers in America 2016.

Andrews Herman was recognized for her excellence in the practice areas of employment law - management, labor law - management, and litigation - labor and employment.

Valley City pharmacy receives award

Central Avenue Pharmacy in Valley City, N.D., was awarded the Health Mart Community Healthcare Excellence Award by Health Mart, a national network of more than 4,000 independently owned pharmacies.

This award is given to pharmacies that consistently provide care and services that add measurable value to patient health care and community wellness. Central Avenue Pharmacy is one of 10 pharmacies across the country to receive the honor.

Distinguished Service Award winners announced

Andrew Swenson and Twin Cities Region Northland Ford Dealers are this year's winners of the Distinguished Service Award presented by the North Dakota Association of Agricultural Educators.

Swenson works for the agriculture economics department at North Dakota State University and was instrumental in helping collect agricultural data for use and publication by North Dakota Farm Business Management.

Twin Cities Region Northland Ford Dealers has been a N.D. Team Ag Ed Distinguished Star Partner since 2012. Through the program, they have directly contributed to the success of all entities involved in strengthening North Dakota's agriculture education curriculum from the secondary, post-secondary to adult levels.

Turman included in Super Lawyers list

Joseph Turman has been included in the 2015 Great Plains Super Lawyers list. Turman is a partner in the Turman & Lang law firm in Fargo.

His primary areas of practice are business transactions, construction, real estate and business litigation.

Clay County Outstanding Conservationists named

The Clay Soil and Water Conservation District has selected Tim and Steph Schlauderaff and their family, of Barnesville, Minn., as Clay County's Outstanding Conservationists for 2015.

Tim is originally from Detroit Lakes, Minn., and he grew up on the family's dairy farm. Steph is from Nashua, Minn., and has ties to farming as her father works for a farmer. Steph graduated from Nettleton Career College as a paralegal. She is currently studying accounting at Minnesota State Community and Technical College.

Over the years, the Schlauderaffs have planted numerous trees to control wind erosion, beautify their farmstead and provide wildlife habitat. They also have land enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program. Most recently, a series of five stream barbs were installed, with assistance from the Clay SWCD, to control streambank erosion along Hay Creek which runs through their property.

The Schlauderaffs have five children: Isaac, Autumn, Logan, Morgan and Micah. Along with other outstanding conservationists from the 89 SWCDs throughout Minnesota, they will attend the Minnesota Association of Soil and Water Conservation District's annual convention Dec. 7-8 in Bloomington.

Asche named to Million Dollar Round Table

Steve Asche, Fargo, a wealth adviser with Thrivent Financial's Northland Regional Financial Office, has earned membership in the 2015 Million Dollar Round Table.

He qualified for this honor based on his outstanding client service, ethical conduct and professional knowledge in 2014.

The MDRT is an international, independent association of leading life insurance and financial services professionals. Asche has attained MDRT membership 22 times.

Local attorneys named Super Lawyers, Rising Stars

Kristy L. Albrecht and Todd E. Zimmerman, attorneys with the Fredrikson & Byron Fargo office, were named to the 2015 Great Plains Super Lawyers list. Albrecht's areas of practice are employment and labor, and Zimmerman's area of practice is business litigation.

Super Lawyers is a rating service of outstanding lawyers from more than 70 practice areas who have attained a high-degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. The selection process includes independent research, peer nominations and peer evaluations.

Additionally, two Fredrikson & Byron attorneys from the Fargo office were named to the 2015 Great Plains Rising Stars list. They are Michael S. Raum, tax, and Aubrey J. Zuger, business litigation. The Rising Stars designation honors leading attorneys who are either 40 years old or younger or in practice for 10 years or less.

Women's Business Exchange elects board members

The Women's Business Exchange has elected new board members for 2015-16. Those elected include:
