Don't Speak: (inspired by "The Little Mermaid") (A Modern Fairytale) Kindle Edition
From New York Times bestseller Katy Regnery comes a new twist on a beloved fairytale.
A fisherman’s daughter.
The governor’s son.
Two very different worlds.
In this modern retelling of The Little Mermaid, a fisherman’s daughter from an Outer Banks island untouched by time, meets the son of North Carolina’s governor at a fancy party where she’s working. Laire, who wants so much more from life than her little island can offer, is swept away by wealthy, sophisticated Erik, who is, in turn, entranced by her naiveté and charm. The two spend a whirlwind summer together that ends on the knife-point of heartbreak and forces them to go their separate ways.
Years later, when fate leads them back to one another, they will discover the terrifying depth of the secrets they kept from each other, and learn that shattered hearts can only be healed by a love that willfully refuses to die.

If you haven't read her previous books in this series then you really should do yourself a favour as each book is more than worth your while and you definitely will not regret it.
This story is about Laire and Erik two young people that couldn't be more different. Their love story is beautiful and special only to be brought to a halt with lies and secrets.
Erik is the son of the governor of North Carolina. Local royalty of sorts. He is finishing college and planning to go to law school. Laire is a fisherman's daughter on a local island that time has forgotten, the tenth generation of Cornishes to live on the island. No tourists. No cell phones. Dial up Internet in limited locations. She dreams of going away to college to study fashion design. They meet when Laire delivers fresh crabs for a party at the governor's island mansion, and there is an instant attraction. But Erik's family would never accept a fisherman's daughter, and Laire's family would disown her for dating a dingbatter (outsider). Can they find a way to be a part of each other's worlds?
The plot was interesting and somewhat suspenseful. Laire's life seemed to be one tragedy after another, and I kept thinking, "Won't she ever get a break?" The characters were well developed and immediately likable, although I was frustrated at how quick they both were to lose faith in each other when their families put obstacles in their way. Erik was sweet, patient, and romantic. Laire was naive but very brave. The secondary character of Judith really warmed my heart.
This was my first book by Kate Regnery. I struggled through the first couple of chapters because they were a bit slow moving and corny feeling, but I'm glad I pushed through. Don't Speak really touched me, and it's one of the few books I've ever felt inclined to re-read. I look forward to looking up other modern fairy tales by Kate Regnery.
A Book Lover's Emporium
I'm a HUGE fan of Katy's stories, especially her Modern Fairytale series and this time she has really outdone herself. There wasn't I thing that I didn't adore about this book!!!
Laire and Erik, god I think they're my favourite couple of Katy's. Their love for one another despite their differences just did me in. I was a goner from the first moment they laid eyes on each other. How could I not? He wanted her and he pursued her, and she could do little to fight the pull she felt toward him.
And sweet and also sexy Erik has definitely pushed past ALL of Katy's other heroes and now has a permanent place in my heart. He did everything right!!! He was sweet, flirty, and he was never once embarrassed of Laire. Did he lie and keep her a secret? Yes! But not because he wasn't bursting at the seams to tell everyone. He had to protect her, and that was the only way he knew how to do it.
I'm going to stop here because I don't want to ruin anything for someone who hasn't read it yet. And if you haven't, I've got to tell you that's a shame because you're really missing out. This has definitely hit my top reads of 2017!!!
And the little homages to The Little Mermaid did not go unnoticed. They were subtle but if you've ever watched the movie you'll catch them. ❤
This is simply beautiful, the characters, the setting, the story but mostly the writing. Katy writes in such a way that you feel like your there, you can smell the ocean her words are evocative.
Laire is a fishermans daughter who lives a sheltered life on the island of Corey, she's such a sweet girl but very naive not just to the outside world but she knows nothing about men. Erik is the sophisticated Governors son who sweeps her off her feet. I loved how gentle he was with Laire when explaining about the opposite sex, he took his time and didn't pressure her or rush her to explore their feelings for each other.
They spend a summer falling in love but when the summer ends they are tragically torn part. When they meet up years later can they get past all the secrets, lies and past hurts to have a future or is a HEA not in their future.

This story is a modern retelling of The Little Mermaid. Laire is a daughter of a fisherman from the Outer Banks. Laire grew up sheltered within a small community with her father and two sisters. He was expected to pick a nice island boy, marry and raise nice little island children but Laire has bigger dreams. She wants to get off the island, move to a big city and become a successful fashion designer. One summer Laire met Erik, a son of North Carolina’s governor. The love birds spent a whirlwind summer sneaking around together trying to escape the town gossip and their family’s disapproval. Erik knows in his heart that Laire is the one but unfortunately his fate was decided by someone else. I really feel bad for Laire – for the cruel treatment from Erik’s family who believes that social status is most important. They have bigger plans for Erik – to follow his father’s footstep and to marry well. The summer romance was short lived and by the end of it their hearts were irrevocably broken.
Several years later, fate leads Erik and Laire back together - broken hearted but both are older and wiser. How have they been all these years? Slowly, all the misunderstandings and secrets come to light. Can Erik and Laire find in their heart to forgive, restore faith, trust each other and fall in love again?
Don’t Speak is a gorgeous love story. The first part of the book tells a story when Erik and Laire were young, free and in love so it was mostly light-hearted, sexy, cute, and fun. As the story progress, it was harder and harder to read. I was crying my eyes out during the events that lead up to how their summer ended. The cruel, unfair circumstances that Laire had to suffer – it really gutted my heart. Laire is so innocent, sweet, beautiful, honest and she deserves so much more. I adore Erik – he is handsome, charming, fun and has a big heart. He is nothing like his selfish parents. I especially love the commitment Erik has for Laire – he always believes that Laire is his forever and he never forgets that. The second part when they met again there was more heart breaking (especially the letters – it was all too much for me ). I was devastated for both of them. But if anything, Erik and Laire made me believe in faith and destiny and that everlasting love does exist despite any distance or barriers. Love will find a way.
This book is truly a masterpiece – a beautiful tale of 2 young lovers from the opposite tracks who found friendship and everlasting love. I find this fairytale story stunning - a bit haunting, emotional, heartbreaking, but at the same time soul healing, passionate and oh so romantic. I can’t wait for you all to read it!
As always, Katy is donating part of her royalties for a good cause. I adore this woman – she is one of my very favorite authors. THANK YOU KATY!!!

Every story Katy writes seeps into my soul and carries me through every journey her characters take, like I'm there, living it myself. Right from page one, I'm one with the story.
This story she tells is of love and loss, devastation, deception, conception, lies and loneliness, and finding each other again.
One beautiful summer, a young girl ,a fisherman's daughter, a young boy a governors son, fall in love. There's no way they can share it with anyone else, no one can find out about them because no one would approve or understand. Summer comes to an end and their last night together ends in devastation, lives are torn apart, shattered hearts. Lies, and Broken Promises keep them apart.
Years pass but their love for one another never fades. It will never fade.

but Katy turns the ship around and ads some serious sadness. and the heroin grows stronger as the book goes on. so in the end Katy won one more star.
