TV Article Ryan Adams is covering Taylor Swift's '1989' By Ariana Bacle Published on August 6, 2015 01:42PM EDT Photo: Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic Taylor Swift’s “Welcome to New York” is a bit peppy — so Ryan Adams is bringing its happiness level down a notch: The musician posted a series of Instagram videos Wednesday night announcing that he’s covering Swift’s 1989 in the style of The Smiths. “Guaranteed saddest version of Welcome to New York ever,” he captioned one photo, “or your tears back.” When Swift caught wind of the news, she flipped (understandably). This isn’t the first time Adams has played around with covers: Back in 2002, he told NME that he covered The Strokes’ Is This It “as a blues record,” and his 2004 rendition of Oasis’ “Wonderwall” remains one of his more well-known tracks. But Adams didn’t specify any plans of releasing the 1989 covers, though he did post a snippet of their Bruce Springsteen-style “Welcome to New York” on his Instagram.
