After their strong showing at Comic-Con, Kermit and Miss Piggy conquered Beverly Hills for ABC’s summer press tour promoting this fall’s The Muppets — although there was significantly more tension in the air as the famed frog and pig took the stage to announce their break-up.

Kermit and Piggy arrived separately to join executive producers Bill Prady and Bob Kushell for a press conference on the network’s upcoming docu-style sitcom, which follows the troupe’s life behind the scenes of Piggy’s late-night talk show Up Late with Miss Piggy. Amid questions from critics about the show’s modern flair and celeb cameos (Imagine Dragons will appear!), most reporters latched onto Kermit’s somber announcement that he and Piggy had mutually decided to end their long, long, long relationship.

“Piggy and I have gone our separate ways romantically,” said the frog/entrepreneur, who will still executive produce Piggy’s new show despite the breakup. “It can be tough to work with your ex. It can be tough to be the executive producer on your ex’s late-night TV show, especially when your ex is a pig. I don’t know whether any of you have ever dated pigs.”

While Kermit assured the crowd of critics that they’re both “professional adults,” Piggy showed up to inject some doubt into the equation. “One of us is certainly professional,” said the late-night host. “You can guess who that is, I’m sure. I have no problem working with my ex, okay? It’s fine. It’s totally healed.” She continued: “Dating moi is like flying close to the sun. It was inevitable that Kermit would drop down to the ground while I stayed in the heavens.”

An official statement was released on behalf of both camps below:

“After careful thought, thoughtful consideration and considerable squabbling, we have made the difficult decision to terminate our romantic relationship. We will continue to work together on television and in all media now known or hereafter devised, in perpetuity, throughout the universe. However, our personal lives are now distinct and separate, and we will be seeing other people, pigs, frogs, et al. This is our only comment on this private matter … unless we get the right offer. Thank you for your understanding.”

The couple appear to have moved on from their fraught relationship. Kermit has been getting pretty serious with Denise, a marketing exec at ABC, while Piggy was last known to be dating former That ’70s Show actor Topher Grace.
