Robin Smith, a longtime television news anchor in St. Louis, announced Sunday that she will run for the Missouri Secretary of State’s Office.Smith, who retired from KMOV-TV last week after 40 years, said she will run as a Democrat for the job. The secretary of state oversees elections in the state and informs the public about business issues."What Missouri needs now, more than ever, is a public servant who checks their politics at the door. That has been my life's work and my training. I look forward to giving Missourians straightforward, professional service as their Secretary of State,” Smith said.Republican candidate Jay Ashcroft said he thinks Smith will follow in the footsteps of Democratic secretaries of state Robin Carnahan and Jason Kander, who he said used the office to advance a liberal agenda and deny that voter fraud exists.“In my travels around the state, Missourians are ready for a Secretary of State who is committed to combating voter fraud and passing a common sense photo voter ID law,” he said. “I welcome Robin Smith into the race and look forward to a clear contrast of our vision for the office.”Smith is married to Isaac "Bud" Stallworth, a University of Kansas basketball star who went on to play in the NBA.
