Would you let your man dress in Aldi? Supermarket launches first men's fashion range by HARRIET ARKELL SAVVY SHOPPER

Aldi launched itself by taking on Waitrose and wooing its high-end customers with great food at rock-bottom prices.

Now it’s fronting up to High Street clothing giants M&S and Next, with its first fashion range for men.

The German discounter, which was named best supermarket at the recent Which? awards, has stocked basic men’s clothing in the past.

But this is the first time that Aldi has entered the highly competitive men’s fashion arena since its first store was opened in Britain in 1990.

THE BAKER WHO USED THEIR LOAF

If you always have an untoasted edge where your slice of bread sticks out of the top of the toaster, Morrisons has the answer.

It’s launched a square loaf that means you’ll never have to turn over your slice of bread to avoid having an annoying bready strip. The loaf was developed after research for the supermarket showed more than a third of Britons said it was one of the culinary quirks that irritated them the most.

The loaf has been designed to stay fresher for longer than standard loaves — Morrisons says its rich moisture content means it will stay fresh for six days. The square Rathbones comes in medium or ‘toastie’ (ie thick) and costs 72p for an 800g white loaf.

The new summer clothing range includes linen trousers, smart chino shorts and Oxford shirts, all at staggeringly low prices.

The linen trousers cost just £9.99, while a similar pair at Next would set you back £30 or £19.50 at M&S.

Chino shorts are £7.99, Oxford shirts £6.99 each and there are also marl zipped hoodies (£8.99 each), T-shirts (£3.99) and summer hats (£2.99) in a range of styles and colours.

Tony Baines, Aldi’s managing director of corporate buying, says: ‘We’re really excited about this launch, as it will help men across the country cut the cost of their must-have summer wardrobe.’

If, like me, you’re married to a man who wears suits all week and is loathe to spend too much on casual clothes he’ll wear for just a few short weeks in the summer, this new range — where a pair of trousers, shorts, shirt, T-shirt, hoodie and hat costs a total of £40.94 — makes sense.

I picked up a T-shirt and the cotton felt softer and thicker than you would expect for the money.

The men’s summer range is in Aldi stores now on Specialbuy, which means that it is available only until stocks run out.
