Trump envoy primes UK supporters of Israel for deal of the century ‘compromise’

A top US envoy said on Monday that details of President Donald Trump’s proposed “deal of the century” would be revealed imminently, and that it would entail “compromises” for both Israelis and Palestinians, Israel’s Channel 10 reported.

Jason Greenblatt, Trump’s special representative for international negotiations, urged a conference of private British funders of the Israeli military to withhold their criticism of Trump’s "Deal of the Century" - details of which are expected to be made public on or around 1 December - until they have seen the text for themselves.

“Before you form an opinion on Trump’s peace plan, read it from start to finish. Don’t listen to rumours concerning the plan,” Greenblatt is alleged to have told an assembly of the London branch of Friends of the Israel Defence Forces, according to Channel 10.

“No side will love everything in the peace plan and there will be a need to compromise,” Greenblatt is said to have told the assembly. “But we are sure that if both sides agree to enter negotiations, they will understand why we came to the conclusions that will be presented in the plan.”

Greenblatt’s London meetings came on the heels of a trip to Israel, during which he met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem as part of efforts to prepare the ground for Trump’s peace plan.

His efforts to encourage Palestinians to be more receptive to Trump’s proposal seemed to fall short, with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas asserting on Saturday that US moves to limit Palestinian aspirations would be unsuccessful.

At a commemoration of the 14th anniversary of the death of late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, Abbas slammed recent US decisions to end funding to the Palestinian refugee relief agency UNRWA and to upgrade the American consulate in Jerusalem to its embassy to Israel, saying: “East Jerusalem, with all of its people, institutions and Christian and Islamic holy places, is the capital of our state.”
