The Anixter Center is seeking volunteer tutors for our adult literacy program! Volunteers would be expected to complete approximately fourteen hours of online training on being a literacy tutor and working with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Once training is complete we ask that volunteers commit to one hour a week of one-on-one tutoring for a minimum of three months but we would of course prefer that they stick around longer! Become a Mentor & Impact a Woman's Life TODAY!
Women who grew up in foster care rarely have anyone they can turn to for support and guidance. Many navigate the world without the skills, knowledge, or guidance that most of us received growing up at home. The adversities our population has faced vary from being unhoused, incarcerated, and/or survivors of gender-based violence. For some, their adversity has made them stronger. 50/50 Leadership offers a series of financial literacy workshops called Money 101 that provide a basic set of financial skills for managing money. Upon completion of Money 101, we offer our members the opportunity to enroll in a 9-month mentorship relationship to help further their ability to stay on track and to reach their desired goals. You do not need to be a financial expert - while mentees may be looking for accountability in budgeting, if you have had some success managing your own finances over time, we encourage you to apply. We ask that our mentors are at least 30 years old. We will provide training and resources for our mentors. Mentors are expected to complete an activity log after each session with a mentee. The time commitment is no more than 2 hours per month, and one 90-minute training session annually. This is your opportunity to make a very real difference in a woman’s life. This is an opportunity to listen compassionately, offer guidance and cheer them on. You will be an accountability partner to a woman who needs your support. 50/50 Leadership was founded in 2004 to promote women’s equal leadership. Women are half the population; our vision is that they be half the leaders. Money 101 is our financial literacy program for women who did not receive basic money management skills growing up. Many of them grew up in foster care, some are unhoused, formerly incarcerated, and/or survivors of gender-based violence. Although this is a very basic course, a solid understanding of personal finance and money management are needed. This includes knowing the difference between banks and credit unions; budgeting and goal setting; how to save; the ins and outs of credit - when to use it, and how to clean it up. We particularly appreciate if you have a story of coming through adversity to success. What is not basic about this course is that these women have lived through much trauma and present their own challenges so a great deal of compassion is needed. If you can adapt on your feet, be 100% non-judgmental, and truly open to wanting to give these women the skills and knowledge for them to build a financial foundation for their lives, this will be a very rich and rewarding opportunity for you. The workshops are on zoom, there is ample training and you are always partnered with another facilitator. We offer social and educational sessions by phone and video. We're looking for volunteers to facilitate our 30-minute COFFEE TALK session on Wednesdays at 10:30 am - 11:00 am Central Standard Time (CST). Youth participate in weekly career preparation-focused group meetings, including peer-supported goal setting and exploration of careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Each youth meets regularly one-on-one with a mentor to develop and implement an Individualized Mentoring Plan (IMP). Mentors are caring adults recruited from the community, schools, employers, and partner organizations. Youths’ families, teachers, and support network are engaged in career fairs, college visits, and extended learning activities. At the end of the program, each group of youth works with an industry advisor to complete a high-tech project. While in RAMP TM, youth have the opportunity to assess and explore their own career interests; develop a plan and set goals for their transition; create a resource map of their community’s high-tech industries; gain workplace soft skills; build resume-writing and interviewing skills; interact with employers and experience a variety of work settings; give and receive peer support; take advantage of group and personal leadership opportunities; design and build a high-tech-related team project, and most importantly... have fun! Brighten up their rooms with decorations, and give them comfort with wheel chair pillows. One volunteer is even making puzzles for them to do. Some are writing stories for them to read. We want to bring smiles to their faces. We also have a need for people to make educational videos. Make videos and/or interesting interactive curriculum for volunteer training. I would like the volunteers to get their training online watching and interacting with something fun and engaging. After all, volunteering should be enjoyable! Our organization focuses on news about making the world a better place, particularly news related to topics such as global poverty, philanthropy, climate change, voluntarism and human rights. All volunteering is via the computer -- you can be anywhere in the world. The marketing volunteer usually does a mix of the following: 1) Research potential nonprofits that would be a good match for our website. Nearly all of our news is oriented towards making the world a better place, and that's also the mission of most nonprofits We particularly focus on things like global poverty, human rights, democracy, climate change and fighting modern-day slavery. So people who work at and donate to nonprofits that focus on those topic areas are an ideal audience for our news website. In the big picture, if their supporters learn more about these topics, they will be better and more committed long-term supporters. So it's to their benefit if their supporters read our articles. We will primarily contact them via email and their social media accounts. 3) Volunteers also research potential media outlets and blogs to cover our site, send out our press releases, and keep track of coverage of our site that has occurred. The volunteer also helps promote the website by updating our Facebook, Twitter and other social media pages, attracting new followers, and interacting with our existing followers. 4) We are also creating many exciting new websites that you could be involved in marketing. They fall into two broad categories: A) a group of innovative websites to provide other nonprofits (and their supporters) with unique tools they can use to raise money for their causes. Make Toys for Shelter Animals
with Project CanisProject Canis is a new nonprofit organization started by students at the University of Florida to ensure that every shelter animal has a toy. Project Canis helps cats and dogs in Florida shelters by making and donating pet toys made from recycled materials. Many animal shelters struggle to get donations and are not financially able to provide toys, which are essential to animals' emotional and physical well-being. Anyone can participate in Project Canis remotely by sending in toys they made individually or as a service project with their organization. We have three toy designs: the braid, the plushie, and the crunch that can be made easily with recycled materials such as old t-shirts and plastic water bottles. Making the toys is super easy and fun, and participating in Project Canis is a great way for organizations to give back to the community. Helpline advocates are vital to RCC’s mission and play a crucial role in our ability to provide 24/7 immediate support to victims of sexual assault. Many times, all a survivor wants is a compassionate and nonjudgmental ear to talk to. As a helpline advocate, you will often be the first point of contact for survivors when they are reaching out for help. No experience is necessary, our 15+ hour training process will equip you with all the necessary skills including compassionate listening, crisis intervention, and trauma-informed practices. We require a one year/1 shift per month commitment from all new volunteers. Once volunteers are approved to staff the helpline, they begin fulfilling their commitment by signing up for helpline shifts which run from 7pm-7am (every night of the week- volunteers are allowed to sleep during overnight shifts) as well as from 9-5 on Saturdays and Sundays. There will be downtime in between calls and so you are welcome to bring a book, laptop, crossword puzzle, etc. to keep yourself occupied. You have the option of staffing a volunteer shift alone or with another volunteer. There will always be an RCC staff member on call available to support you throughout your shift. We are distributing boxes of groceries for curbside pickup outside of our facility. We need volunteers to help sort donations, pack boxes of groceries, and carry the boxes out to the clients. On Mondays, volunteers will be sorting and preparing for the curbside market. Tuesdays through Fridays, the market will be hosting curbside distribution, so volunteers will either be sorting, preparing boxes and carts of groceries, or loading groceries into clients' vehicles. This is a very rewarding and flexible volunteer opportunity. We ask for a time commitment of 2 hours per week, any day of the week, between the hours of 8:00am-8:00pm. We train and support volunteers to be advocates for nursing home residents 60 and older. Volunteer Ombudsmen make unannounced visits to their assigned facility once a week between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., providing a valuable opportunity for residents to share concerns, offer ideas and talk with someone independent of the facility. This volunteer program promotes residents’ rights and many times volunteers are the voice for residents who don’t have family or visitors. The residents look forward to the weekly visits with their Volunteer Ombudsman. Current volunteers say that they get more out of being an advocate in the program than they give-it’s a win-win for everyone! Volunteers should: Enjoy spending time with nursing home residents. Make unannounced, weekly visits to an assigned facility during designated time frames. Agree to follow all training, safety & infection control practices. Pass a criminal background check, (Paid by our agency) Be free from conflict of interest. Attend mandatory training. Provide your own transportation. Complete & submit monthly reports.
