The first installment of the Leadership in Heels lecture series will take place Friday from 7 to 9 a.m. at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach. Keynote speaker Scharrell Jackson will explore the topic “The Brand New You – What’s Behind the Makeup,” a discussion aimed toward women business leaders. Jackson, chief financial and administrative officer of certified public accountant and financial firm Squar Milner in Newport Beach, started Leadership in Heels to bring women together to motivate them in personal and community roles. Steve Madrid was hired as director of sales at b.spoke, a Costa Mesa men’s custom formal wear business. Madrid, who has more than 30 years experience in the luxury clothing business, previously worked for Brooks Brothers in Beverly Hills as the men’s clothing and made-to-measure manager.

Dr. Shaista Malik was promoted from UC Irvine Health cardiologist to director of the Susan Samueli Center for Integrative Medicine. Established in 2001, the center conducts clinical research with integrative medicine practices that combine conventional medicine with alternative approaches including acupuncture, massage, herbal medicine, biofeedback and yoga. Malik is also director of the UCI Health Preventive Cardiology Program and an expert in women’s cardiovascular health.

New Ventures

Purple Platypus, an Irvine-based company that markets, sells and services 3D printing systems and supplies, revealed its latest 3D printer additions and a newly redesigned showroom last week.

An Irvine-based semiconductor company, RFaxis, is partnering with Austin, Texas-based Silicon Labs on chip-set reference designs that will address the Internet of Things and smart home markets. RFaxis focuses on developing solutions for the wireless connectivity market.

Milestone

The Anaheim Packing House won four awards from PCBC’s 52nd annual homebuilding tradeshow in San Diego in categories that included Best Sustainable Commercial Project, Best Rehab Commercial Project, Best Site Plan for Commercial Project and the grand award for Best Commercial Project of the Year. Shaheen and Linda Sadeghi, designers and managers of the project, accepted the awards on behalf of The LAB. A trade group of designers, PCBC awards projects for “innovation, imagination and vitality” as well as “improving our communities through exceptional concepts in design, planning and development.”

The California Association of Community Managers awarded four community association managers from Orange County with the certified Community Association Manager designation for the second quarter of 2015. They include:

• Nycole Burts with Westchester Bay/Seagate Lagoons Homeowners Association in Irvine;

• Cecilia de Heras and Tess Mailloux with Action Property Management in Irvine;

• Brigitte Fernandez with Consensys Property Management in Anaheim;

Based in Laguna Hills, CACM is comprised of 3,000 California-based professionals from the community association management industry.

VC UPDATE

Irvine-based Kareo raised $55.4 million in an investment round led by San Francisco-based Montreux Equity Partners. Menlo Park-based Silver Lake Waterman and all of Kareo’s current investors also participated in the funding, which will be used toward the company’s product line development. Kareo produces cloud-based software for small medical practices.

Cylance, an Irvine-based security software company, raised $42 million in a funding round led by Menlo Park-based DFJ Growth. Other investors included Dell Ventures, CapitalOne, DraperNexux, Fairhaven Capital and Khosla Ventures. The money will be used to boost sales, marketing and global expansion.
