LOWELL – An unidentified man in his 20’s died Tuesday night as a result of injuries suffered when he was thrown from his motorcycle after it struck a guardrail in the median of the VFW Highway, according to police.

Emergency crews were called to the portion of VFW Highway between Beaver Brook and the UMass Lowell’s Cushing Fields just before 8 p.m., when 911 callers began reporting that a motorcycle rider was thrown from his bike, according to police radio broadcasts.

Callers told police the biker was thrown over the guardrail in the median of the highway when his motorcycle struck the guardrail, and that the rider and the motorcycle ended up on opposite sides of the highway, according to radio broadcasts.

Emergency crews immediately closed the road in both directions and lifted the severely injured biker over the guardrail before putting him an ambulance.

Fire department radio broadcasts indicated the biker would be taken to Lowell General Hospital/Main Campus to be stabilized as a MedFlight helicopter waited to fly him to a Boston-area trauma center.

Later Tuesday night, police said the rider was pronounced dead at Lowell General Hospital before he could be flown to Boston. Police did not immediately release his identity, exact age, or town of residence.

Police were just beginning their investigation and could not immediately provide more information.
