Fascinating series of photos show how dorm life has changed over the last 100 years (and students' poor taste has ALWAYS remained)

  • UW's collection of photos of dorm life stretches back to the lace-fringed student housing of the Victorian Era and forward to the 2008 when students lounged beneath Obama 'Hope' posters

What's college life but four bliss-filled years of down time punctuated by a few classes, final exams and long, pensive deliberations over where in your dorm room to keep your bone china tea set?

At least that's what it appears to have been like in the early days of the University of Wisconsin according to a trove of historical photographs, dating all the way back to 1898, that the school's archives have made available on Flickr.

From those frilly, lace-filled dorms, the photos progress through the early 20th century, when men were truly men (as evidenced by their steadfast reluctance to smile) and into the super-smiley halcyon days of the post-WWII Midwest.

And while echoes of fireside singalongs comprised of male students named Chip have faded--first into the drug fueled existential discussions of the 60s and 70s, the preppy business banter of the 80s, lackadaisical repartee of the 90s and Millennial musings of today--one thing has remained the same and these photos prove it:

College students have far too much time on their hands.
