A father-of-two who lost his leg in a horrific car accident has been refused benefits because he is not "disabled enough".

Dean Williams, 25, had his left leg amputated after he was crushed against a car park wall by a van.

The former removal man and gardener has now been left wheelchair bound and is unable to work and live independently.

Last month he applied to the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) for a personal independence payment (PIP) of just £50 a week to help him afford to live.

But Government officials told him he does not qualify for the disability benefit after ruling he can stand up and move 200 metres unaided - even with one leg.

Furious Dean said: "How disabled do I have to be?"

"It is incredible.

"I am someone who has been in a car crash and lost a limb and that isn't disabled enough. I

"It is terrible.

"I have tried to appeal but they [the DWP] have not been helpful.

"They keep saying you need to write to them so I have but heard nothing yet.

"They have not explained their decision at all.

"It is awful, really frustrating.

"I'm a bloke with one leg.

"What state would I have to be in to get the full points?

"I've worked since I was 17 years old, putting money into the system and now I can't get any help when I'm desperate for it."

Dean was left fighting for his life in hospital after the horrific accident on June 7.

Following a nine-hour operation, medics were forced to amputate his left leg below the knee.

PIP is a benefit for people aged 16 to 64 with a long-term health condition or disability and is gradually replacing Disability Living Allowance.

It is allocated on a points based system - with more money being paid the higher the score awarded.

In Dean's letter of refusal on August 3 the assessor explains his decision by saying: "You said you have difficulties moving around.

"I have decided you can stand then move more than 200 metres."

Dean added: "The number of points I need to get some help is eight and they scored me six.

"But I actually got zero points for the category of being unable to move around.

"I don't know how they work that one out.

"You have to score eight to be disabled but I have lost my leg.

"You fill out a form, which stated I had one leg and I was in wheelchair - so surely that would be enough for them to see I am pretty disabled."

Dean, of Northampton, needs help with washing, going to the toilet and making meals and his mum Denise, 52, has now become his full-time carer.

But he scored zero points in the criteria for impaired mobility and none in the 'moving around' category.

Dean, who has two sons Jack-Mickey, two, Miley-Dean, one, is now living off a miserly £17 per week Jobseeker's Allowance.

He added: "The system is so outdated.

"Nobody came to my home to assess me.

"I think they need to adjust it.

"It is dreadful, not only to me but my family. I

"t has been so hard for them.

"I have been to the doctors for depression since.

"This has really been chipping away at me and this letter has topped it off to be honest.

"I'd give anything to be able to work again but I can't."
