Gratitude is a Verb

Let’s talk about gratitude.

Every non-profit has that form letter, the one that says, “Thank you so much so-and-so for your generous gift…” While, yes, that letter is sincere in its intentions, let’s be honest-its primary purpose is to provide proof of contribution at tax time. Is that letter truly the beginning and end of the gratitude a non-profit can convey to its funders? Let’s challenge ourselves to do more than merely state our gratitude to those who support us, let’s talk about living it.

How do we as non-profit professionals fully express our gratitude to funders in a deliberate way, one that shows that their support is transformative while also furthering the story of our mission and vision?

Funding Opportunities

Paralyzed Veterans of America – Education Fund

Deadline: January 10, 2018

From coordinating workshops for health professionals to producing educational materials to sponsoring fellowships in spinal cord medicine, the Paralyzed Veterans of America Education Foundation helps develop tools that share spinal cord injury and disease (SCI/D) knowledge and improve the lives of those with SCI/D. The Education Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, provides funding in six project categories:

  • Consumer and community education to improve the health, independence and quality of life for individuals with SCI/D
  • Professional development and education to improve the knowledge and competencies of health professionals who serve the SCI/D community, including fellowship and traineeship programs
  • Research utilization and dissemination, which translates findings into practice
  • Assistive technology—Development of teaching tools or pilot programs that demonstrate innovative approaches to the use of assistive devices
  • Conferences and symposia that provide education and collaboration opportunities for members of the SCI/D community
  • Consumer Guides to develop companion consumer information guides based on PVA SCI Consortium Clinical Practice Guidelines.

People for Bikes – Community Grants

Deadline: January 19, 2019 (LOI)

The PeopleForBikes Community Grant Program provides funding for important and influential projects that leverage federal funding and build momentum for bicycling in communities across the U.S. These projects include bike paths and rail trails, as well as mountain bike trails, bike parks, BMX facilities, and large-scale bicycle advocacy initiatives.

PeopleForBikes accepts grant applications from non-profit organizations with a focus on bicycling, active transportation, or community development, from city or county agencies or departments, and from state or federal agencies working locally. PeopleForBikes only funds projects in the United States. Requests must support a specific project or program; we do not grant funds for general operating costs.

Barr Foundation

Deadline: January 22, 2018

Planning and Design of Schools and Programs for Students who are Off Track to Graduate in New England

The Barr Foundation is seeking proposals for innovative public high schools and programs across New England that are designed to support students who are off track to graduate.

In this first cycle, the Foundation anticipates supporting a cohort of up to eight grantees from across New England, who seek to seed or grow pioneering whole-school models that can effectively boost graduation rates and college readiness for students who have not found the support they need through traditional education models.
