IHSS: Would you prefer having a caregiver come to the home?
While this is typically paid out-of-pocket, as with the Long Term Care option, you may be eligible for In Home Support Services (IHSS). If eligible, a portion of the costs will be subsidized. Affordable Living for Aging  (ALA) is an agency that offers solutions for creating affordable housing and reducing isolation among seniors. It was founded in 1978.  ALA Services include:
·         Share Housing: "Independence through Interdependence." ALA pairs seniors with individuals who can offer assistance in exchange for lower rent.  Staff coaches seniors through the process and monitors matched clients by visiting their homes.
·         Home Care: Matches a caregiver.
·         Supportive Housing:  Permanent housing for homeless seniors.  A team of ALA social workers provide onsite services to 125 formerly homeless tenants.  List of locations.

Resources for the Caregiver
These links below are for caregivers. To properly care for someone and prevent burnout (that can lead to neglect and abuse), one must take care of him/herself as well.
  • Caregivers, you must take care of you, too! The better you take care of yourself, the better you will be able to take care of the elderly person that is relying on you. Here is a great webpage about self-care from the Family Caregiving Alliance
  • Some other self-care tips can be found here (US Department of Veterans)
  • From the Mayo Clinic, some tips to relieve the stress of caregiving.
