FLINT, MI -- A former apartment building was engulfed by flames Saturday night on Flint's east side.

Firefighters worked for hours to contain flames piercing the night sky after 9 p.m. at the corner of Lewis Street and Delaware Avenue, situated on the west side of a tree line from two vacant homes.

Neighbors on scene said the building used to operate as an apartment complex, with a chimney and metal staircase the only items that remained upright after fire ate through the rest of the structure.

Flint Fire engines and police were spotted at the scene, along with Consumers Energy. A section of Lewis Street was temporarily closed as a precautionary measure.

There was no word of any injuries or a cause for the fire.
