Tribe Men's Gymnasts Earn a Record Seventh National Academic Team Title

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (July 13, 2015)—The William & Mary men's gymnastics team earned the program's seventh College Gymnastics Association National Academic team title after posting a combined grade point average of 3.458. Tribe gymnasts have now earned more national academic team titles than any other men's gymnastics team since the inception of the award in 1991.

The success continues a long-standing tradition of excellence in the classroom by Tribe men's gymnasts, as the program won the national academic team titles in 1991, 1992, 2002, 2008, 2012, 2014 and 2015 while placing second six times (1994, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2009, 2013). Additionally, W&M has finished third on three occasions (1999, 2006, 2011).

Tribe gymnasts also continue to lead the nation with more individual All-America Scholar-Athlete honors than any other program in men's gymnastics, as 15 W&M standouts garnered the honor this year. In total, 43 Tribe gymnasts have combined to earn 136 All-American Scholar-Athlete honors.

"The sustained effort it takes to earn a national academic team title is absolutely remarkable," head coach Cliff Gauthier said. "I couldn't be prouder of our men's gymnastics team as success both on and off the field of play is what William & Mary athletics is all about."

Ten W&M gymnasts earned first-team All-American Scholar-Athlete designation by the CGA for the 2015 season: Ryan Metzger, Mat Turnansky, Aria Sabbagh, Peter Ten Eyck, Mitchell Campbell, Keaton Ackerman, Adam Avant, Rob Meyer, Neal Courter and Michael Deitz. With the honor, Ten Eyck becomes the 10th gymnast in school history to earn first-team All-American Scholar-Athlete accolades four times. Second-team All-American Scholar-Athlete designation were awarded to Jake Feldmann, Griffin Antle, J.J. Jindra, Jeremiah McReynolds and Jason Wang.

Led by Turnansky, the sophomore class that included Sabbagh and Meyer finished as the Tribe's top class by earning a combined grade point average of 3.72. Metzger capped an outstanding freshman class consisting of Campbell, Antle, Feldmann and McReynolds that managed to tally a 3.54 grade point average. The senior class of Ten Eyck, Deitz, Jindra, and Wang came in with a solid 3.44 grade point average. Ackerman was tops in the junior class as he, Avant, Courter, Nick Van Dyke and Simon Casey combined for a 3.23 grade point average.
