The path to war with the Saviors just got a whole lot shorter.
Though Daryl saved Carol from being a victim of Richard’s scheme to spur Ezekiel to action, Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead found the king’s right-hand man coming up with an alternative plan, which, right on cue, went disastrously awry. How disastrously? By the end of the hour, two characters were dead — and neither of them were Saviors. That disastrously. Read on for all the gory deets.
‘JUST TELL ME IF IT’S TRUE’ | Early on in “Bury Me Here,” Carol, haunted after her reunion with Daryl, marched toward a skyline as pretty as the backdrop to a Charlie Brown cartoon to visit the Kingdom and ask Morgan why Jesus had brought Rick & Co. there. Had Daryl’s too-good-to-be-true talk about Alexandria’s deal with the Saviors been a lie? When she didn’t buy Morgan’s feeble fibs, he offered to escort her to Alexandria so that she could speak to Daryl herself. But, Morgan noted, she had claimed to want to get away from everyone. Had she changed her mind? Was she learning that it was too late to get away? Leaving frustrated, Carol denied Benjamin’s request to walk with her so that he could pick up some of her walker-felling skills.
While outside of the Kingdom Richard was digging a grave beneath a child’s backpack with the name Katy on it — hello, foreshadowing! — Benjamin was inside, further bonding with Morgan by giving him a painting for his spartan quarters. “I was getting tired of looking at that nail,” Morgan cracked. Later, as the Kingdom’s liaisons with the Saviors prepared to make their regular drop-off, Richard apologized to Morgan for the antagonism between them and acknowledged that the newcomer to the community was a good man. However, he added, “the day’s coming when you can’t be that good.” When that day arrives, don’t feel bad about it. En route to the drop-off, Ezekiel and his contingent were blocked by a row of shopping carts that seemed to have been designed to lead them to an open grave — guess whose — marked with a sign reading “Bury me here.”
‘DONT INTERRUPT THE KING’ | When the group at last arrived to the drop-off — late — things went south fast, then continued spiraling downward. First, Jared hit Jerry for standing up for the king; then, Gavin, irked about their interactions being “unnecessarily tense,” took the Kingdommer’s guns, because “things [were] about to get emotional.” Why? According to his count, they were short a cantaloupe. Ezekiel offered twice the tribute in an hour’s time, but Gavin wasn’t hearing it. “The problems have to end now,” he said, allowing Jared to point his gun at Richard’s temple. Only, when Richard made it clear that he was willing to be sacrificed (“Just do it”), it ticked off Jared, so he shot Benjamin instead!
Though Gavin was pissed at Jared for going off script, he still made Ezekiel promise before leaving to get Benjamin help to bring the balance owed tomorrow. Unfortunately, the boy was bleeding out so badly that he was beyond help. Before he expired at Carol’s — there’d been no time to get him all the way to the Kingdom — he assured Morgan that it was OK, reminding him that “to injure your opponent is to injure yourself.” Gutted, Morgan returned to the open grave and flashed back through his whole miserable post-apocalyptic experience. He even came close to slitting his wrists before kicking a plastic crate and finding beneath it… the cantaloupe that the Kingdom had been short!
‘IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE ME’ | Hauling ass back to the Kingdom, Morgan confronted Richard, who admitted that he’d set up the conflict, having been warned that the next time one arose, it would be his head on the chopping block. He had been trying to sacrifice himself. (Which would have seemed a lot nobler if he hadn’t so recently been just as willing to sacrifice Carol.) Once upon a time, Richard went on, when the apocalypse had first happened, he had done nothing, and it had cost him both his wife and child. So he couldn’t do that again. He wouldn’t and he hadn’t. And anyway, “we can use what’s happened” to show the Saviors that the Kingdom gets it, he suggested. Then, once they’ve regained the Saviors’ trust, they could join Alexandria, etc., and end their enemies once and for all.
‘START WALKING BACK NOW BEFORE I KILL YOU’ | By delivery time the following day, Richard still hadn’t kept his promise to Morgan to tell Ezekiel what he had done. Overhearing just enough to be suspicious, the king wanted to know what they were discussing, but they were interrupted by the Saviors’ arrival. In so far as one of Negan’s henchmen can seem remorseful, Gavin actually did seem kinda sorry to hear that Benjamin had died. Of course, he still wanted that bleeping cantaloupe. As Richard handed it over, assuring that the Kingdom really understood, Morgan attacked him, strangled him and bashed his head into the ground right in front of everyone! After explaining to Ezekiel that Richard had orchestrated the previous day’s tragedy to start a fight with the Saviors, Morgan then went through with his victim’s plan (in a way, granting his death wish): “I wanted to show you that we get it,” he told Gavin.
While Ezekiel reeled from the revelation, Morgan hastened to mention that Richard had wanted to be the one to be killed, not Benjamin. “He thought he could choose, and that’s why Duane had to die,” he said, accidentally replacing Benjamin’s name with that of his late son. After sending Ezekiel and the others back to the Kingdom, Morgan buried Richard in the spot his sign had indicated, took out his aggressions on some walkers, then visited Carol, revealing not only that he’d murdered Richard but also — at her request — that the Saviors had killed Glenn, Abraham and more. Rick wants to fight them, he added. As for Morgan, he was going to go kill them one by one. Wait, she said. “You can go and not go.” Finally, we saw him sharpening a stick on her porch, while she returned to the Kingdom and told Ezekiel that she’d be there from then on. “We have to get ready,” she told the king. “We have to fight.”
What did you think of “Bury Me Here”? Hit the comments.
Solid episode. However on one hand, I understand to see the need to show the rational behind each communities to join Rick and what the straw was that broke the camels back per se, but on other hand we all know war is coming. I’m ready to see the regulars get together and kick some saviors a**
You know, TWD has always moved slowly. That’s the great storytelling. Problem is too many characters. And too many we care about spread too far apart. So it seems we are moving at a snail’s pace. And it can be frustrating. I enjoyed this episode. My only problem is we all saw Benjamin’s death coming from a mile away. That felt a little cheap this time. But I still am a big TWD fan. Can’t help myself….
Def saw Benjamin’s demise coming from a mile away!
Still enjoyed this episode.
Yep, soon as Morgan asked him about the girl, I said “OK, he’s toast tonight.” That one was way too obvious.
Basically, after his second scene on camera, I guessed he was toast – just a question of when. With Richard trying so hard to get Ezekiel emotionally invested … well, it was so very, very obvious where they were going with it. Shoot, I was guessing what had happened with the opening scene loading one melon in to a truck and you could see the blood stain!
I knew he would be dead meat as soon as he got too many focus, with long scenes with Morgan and Carol. Poor guy.
I wasn’t very surprised that Richard hid the 12th cantelope. It was an OMG moment when Morgan so savagely (and I can understand why) killed Richard. You could feel all of Morgan’s anger and sorrow and suffering as he was killing Richard. Now, Morgan’s killed his 1st non-zombie….but he’s now ready to fight.
Richard was right.
I agree. But he lost me (and maybe Morgan) when he didn’t show any remorse for Benjamin’s death. But it helps to hear him explain where his influence comes from. All these characters are taking actions now because of what has happened to them in this apocalypse. But I still believe the best characters have to retain some sort of humanity.
I thought he was definitely remorseful immediately after it happened. Confused too because he thought he had everything planned out perfectly. When talking with Morgan afterward, he was just focused on the end goal. He was willing to do anything to help save people from making the same mistakes he did. It’s not like Morgan and Carol don’t have blood on their hands either (directly and indirectly).
I think Morgan killing him had as much to do with it helping their cause as it did anything else.
You may be right. But I see a distinction between him honestly being stricken with remorse over the death of a young, decent boy (as the direct result of HIS actions) – and him just regretting that Benjamin had to die instead of him. I think Richard was a good man, but something turned in him. As we heard from his back story last night, he’s been affected by his previous INaction, and I think that gave him tunnel vision now. And I think Morgan either thought he was too dangerous to live (Richard weirded me out when he started talking about leading everyone into battle!), or just wanted to punish him for Benjamin’s death. Morgan def used the circumstances to make the most of the situation with the saviors, but I honestly don’t think he calculated killing Richard just to fulfill Richard’s idea and spurn everyone in to action. The irony isn’t lost on me, though, that both Richard and Morgan blame themselves for their child’s death. I think THAT was the big trigger that flipped way down inside Morgan.
Absolutely brilliant performance by Lennie James. And yes, we need to see the group together fighting already!
Always knew he could act. But man.
All that for an melon. lol TBH Morgan’s character and the kingdom always bore me, so yet again I was underwhelmed. That’s just me tho. I really just want to get this war going, so the story can stop moving at a snail’s pace.
Ironically, Richard knew it would take no more than one melon missing to illustrate how evil these saviors are.
Completely sick of Morgan.
Sad for you. Maybe try paying attention to the storyline?
Yea, I’m not getting that response either. I’ve been frustrated with Morgan’s approach, but I think we need Morgan in this apocalypse. His attitude is not just for the sake of being a pacifist, per se. I think we see now how hard he’s working to keep the craziness in his head at bay. With Glen gone, we need Morgan and people like him to keep the Ricks of this world from becoming Negans!
Soo annoying and boring… he stop the action and just turn everyone close to him whiny for the sake of character development… ’till epiphany comes and they move’on from him and his madness / fake pacifism.
Such profuse (produce?) melondrama tonight!! ;)
Any episode with Carol is a good episode to me. Poor Benjamin. He was a cute kid.
Ive been watching since Day 1 of Season 1 of Walking Dead, hugh fan. Im 67 years old, love it,love it, ive laughed, ive cried, been shocked, but will say this best show on TV. Now im ready to see them wipe out Negan, What a horrible dude!!!I own all seasons of walking dead. As soon as season won comes out its mine.
One Word AWSOME and it begins now
Easily one of the best episodes of the season. Not a lot of filler.
100% agree!!
Agree 100%
I can already picture Carol teaching the Kingdommers how to fight. I hope Daryl would show up to help her train them, too. It would be nice to see them working together again.
I think Daryl is gonna have his hands full at Hilltop w/Maggie. Carol will get any help she needs from tiger boy, lol!!
Yeah, but with the Saviors showing up of course they’re going to ask them about Daryl and his ass will be running off hiding. I DON’T TRUST that punk Gregory, if knows that Maggie and Jesus brought him in he’s gonna rat. I can feel it……..
Gregory is a d-bag, lmao!! I’m surprised he’s still alive.
I’m actually concerned about some people in Alexandria keeping their mouths closed, too. Unfortunately, I believe Aaron’s boyfriend may do something stupid because he erroneously thinks he’s helping keep Aaron safe.
I HOPE he dies in the ”war finale”!!!! Overall this was a good episode glad Morgan killed Richard….poor Benjamin.
The war against Negan lasts a really long time. I’m thinking the season 7 finale will be the start of the war. I’ll be surprised if Gregory makes it to next season.
When Richard stopped the delivery truck and had everyone get out for a “teaching moment” at the shopping-cart wall, I was reminded how different again his leadership skills were from Rick’s (leaving the truck unattended was dumb). As well as how inexperienced all of Rick’s new recruits (The Kingdom, Hilltop, Scavengers) are and how lots of people are going to get (or should be) killed when the war starts.
I love the show, and can’t wait till,,,, the real war starts…
I would really like to know why Richard said you where wrong or your wrong when Morgan strangely him and why did he not tell the king about his plan I think Richard had more going on!! And Morgan killed the wrong person
Why didn’t anyone stop Morgan from killing Richard?? There was plenty of time to pull him off. Richard’s own people let him die by the hands of a man they haven’t known as long…
Great episode but that was a huge hole for me…
The Saviors wouldn’t let them intervene.
Yes, but I also think they were partly stunned frozen in their tracks because Morgan’s demeanor was so strongly the other way–anti-violence. They couldn’t believe what they were seeing, and perhaps even assumed he MUST have been justified.
For me the big hole is the fact that they HAD to bring Benjamin to Carol, because she had medical supplies. Where did Carol end up after being beat up at the end of season 6 ? At the Kingdom, where they seem to have plenty of medical stuff….!
Anyway, great episode though, proving that TWD can write complex characters (hey Rosita) and deliver tension, even when it’s not fan favorite characters.
After they pick up Benjamin and getting him in truck to leave, there is few lines explaining it well.
Not in time to reach the Kingdom, Carol’s palce is nearer and they supplied her with medications.
Quite logical.
Been watching TWD since season 1. I love this show so much; this is the best show since Breaking Bad. Sure it has it’s nuances, but they aren’t bad enough for me to stop watching. If you’ve been watching since season 1 you know that they take their time w/ story telling which allows for buildup, the volcano will explode in due time. Be patient ladies and gentlemen. I do like how characters are split up now, It makes the viewer miss the other characters that much more and allows for anticipation of the next episode i.e. “Who will we see next?” Morgan is smart, Carol is smart when it’s all said and done they do what they have to do for the betterment of the greater good despite their own issues.#savages. War is coming and it will be grand. However, don’t look for Negan to die anytime soon, if at all. If you read the comics, then you know what I’m talking about.
Carol said just what Maggie said. Who will listen now?
Sorry for Benjamin, s death glad Morgan and Carol are going to help with bringing negan down they were both needed badly
