A growing teacher shortage could be addressed by tapping into recently retired people, the government has signaled.

Nicky Morgan, the Education Secretary, has said she wants to encourage a culture of people from other professions joining teaching following the end of their careers.

Speaking at a conference last week, Ms Morgan said she found the prospect “very exciting.”

In the same intervention at the Sutton Trust summit, Ms Morgan also talked about raising standards for pupils.

She said: “Pupils that lag behind their peers should be encouraged to reach their full potential and to go further than simply ‘catching up’.”

“If we would want our own children to study the core academic subjects, we should extend that opportunity to every child.”
