Nancy was born in Ann Shakespeare Cottages, Allnutts Estate, Theydon Garnon, in July 1905. She was christened Ann Shakespeare Wheel. Her parents, James Wheel and Ann Shakespeare, developed the Allnutts Estate from 1896 onwards. She had three siblings. The family moved to Ivy Chimneys in 1906, where they ran the Spotted Dog pub until 1923. Her father died at a young age, and her mother later re-married a Mr Taylor. Nancy attended clerk's college in Walthamstow from 1918. She later married a builder, Mr Youngs.
