Syria: ICRC activities in Homs and Hama, January to June 2015

Since the beginning of 2015 the ICRC and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC), working according to the principles of neutrality and impartiality, have assisted close to two million people, mostly the displaced population and the vulnerable residents in the governorates of Homs and Hama.

Delivering food and other essential items

The ICRC, in partnership with SARC:

  • distributed over 300,000 food parcels to cover the needs of more than 800,000 people in Hama and around 700,000 people in Homs;
  • supported ten collective kitchens in Homs, which offered daily meals to over 12,500 people;
  • supplied household items such as mattresses, mats, candles and hygiene kits to more than 150,000 people in Hama and 104,000 people in Homs;
  • arranged a 40-truck convoy to Aldar Alkabeera and Alwaer areas in Homs governorate to provide food and relief items to over 100,000 people who had long been cut off from basic supplies;
  • provided school kits to over 15,000 children in Homs.

Increasing availability of clean water and improving sanitation conditions

The ICRC, in partnership with SARC:

  • collaborated with water boards to ensure that more than one million people in Hama and over 130,600 people in Homs had access to clean water;
  • delivered water in tankers to around 32,000 displaced people in Homs;
  • distributed bottles of drinking water to around 50,000 people in Hama;
  • provided more than 16,000 kg of pesticides and insecticides to prevent the spread of diseases in the governorates of Homs and Hama;
  • carried out civil works to improve living conditions in seven facilities in Homs and 12 facilities in Hama, serving as temporary shelters for over 3,500 displaced people.

 Providing health care for the sick and wounded

The ICRC, in partnership with SARC:

  • delivered medicine to treat chronic diseases to some 13,000 patients in Homs and some 5,000 patients in Hama;
  • supplied generators and medical items to the Bissan hospital run by the Palestine Red Crescent Society, thereby addressing the needs of 6,000 patients per month;
  • delivered medical equipment to the SARC hospital in Homs;
  • distributed 20,000 bottles of anti-lice shampoo in Homs and Hama;
  • delivered 50,000 bed nets to Hama and 5,000 bed nets to Homs to prevent leishmaniasis infection.
