Time will tell if he's right, but analysts mostly agree that this year will be full of healthcare acquisitions as health systems, information technology companies, software firms, medical practices and service providers seek to find out whether bigger is indeed better in the post-Affordable Care Act world.

Universal Health Services, one of the largest for-profit hospital operators in the United States, has purchased the Foundations Recovery Network for $350 million, adding a stable of addiction facilities to its portfolio. According to the company, the deal brings 322 beds through four residential treatment centers and eight outpatient centers. Full story.

Georgia's Northside Hospital and Gwinnett Medical Center will merge, the healthcare providers announced in September, creating a combined health system that includes 1,400 beds and would employ more than 3,500 physicians. Tennova Healthcare in Eastern Tennessee has added four West Tennessee hospitals to its organization to become one of the largest healthcare systems in the state. True Health Diagnostics will pay $37.1 million for Health Diagnostics Laboratory, making the year-old clinical diagnostics laboratory the largest provider of its kind in the country, according to the company. True Health of Frisco, Texas, acquired Health Diagnostics of Richmond, Virginia, during a court-supervised bankruptcy auction on Sept. 11, according to the company. Full story.

Acadia Healthcare Co. said it wrapped up three acquisitions of behavioral health centers in the United Kingdom on Sept. 4. With the deal closing, Acadia adds six inpatient facilities in the overseas country, run by Partnerships in Care, the company's U.K. subsidiary. According to Acadia, its U.K. business now manages 52 facilities, which generate a combined $35 million in annual revenue. Full story.

DaVita Kidney Care said on August 31 it has formed a joint venture with a hospital chain in China specializing in kidney care as the global provider of dialysis services continues to expand its reach. According to DaVita, the partnership is with the Shunjing Renal Hospital located in China's Shandong province. It is the only private hospital in the province approved to offer dialysis. Full story.

Dialysis center operator DaVita HealthCare Partners said in August it would buy competitor Renal Ventures for $415 million, adding another 36 centers in six states. In addition to the 36 dialysis centers, DaVita will take on several infusion and vascular centers in three states. Full story.

Brooklyln's famed Maimonides Medical Center will partner with the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System, the healthcare providers announced in August, in a move that will integrate their services but keep them running as independent systems. Capital One will take over the healthcare finance arm of GE Capital in a $9 billion deal, the financial firm announced mid-August, turning a company known best for its "what's in your wallet" credit card business into a powerhouse in the healthcare lending sphere. Under terms of the deal, Capital One will take on $8.5 billion in existing healthcare-related loans held by GE. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter. Full story.

Physician staffing company TeamHealth will acquire IPC Healthcare, an acute hospitalist and post-acute care provider, for $1.6 billion in cash, the companies announced this August. The companies said the deal will make them better able to improve their post-acute care services and create better value of care for their partner hospitals and clinicians, which in the age of value-based reimbursements will improve bottom lines for all involved. Oklahoma City based ambulatory surgery centers operator Foundation HealthCare is eyeing acquisitions, and it just took out a $20 million line of credit to make that happen. According to the company, Bank SNB and Texas Capital Bank will give Foundation a $10 million acquisition line of credit and an additional $10 million on an incremental basis. Full story.

Providence Hospitals in South Carolina, a provider long operated by the nonprofit Sisters of Charity Health Systems, said it will be acquired by LifePoint Health for an undisclosed sum. The non-binding agreement that allows the Sisters of Charity Health System and LifePoint to pursue the acquisition of Providence Hospitals on an exclusive basis, Providence announced July 29. Capella Healthcare, a Franklin, Tennessee-based operator of hospitals and acute care centers, will be sold to Medical Properties Trust, a Birmingham, Alabama-based real estate investment trust, for $900 million, the companies announced this past July. Once completed, the deal would be the second in 2015 where a REIT purchased a healthcare provider. In April, real estate company Ventas agreed to takeover Ardent Health Services, one of the country's largest providers, for $1.75 billion. Full story.

Ascension said it will buy four Tennessee hospitals previously jointly owned by Capella Healthcare and parent company Saint Thomas Health for an undisclosed amount. The deal with Capella Healthcare will bring four hospitals located in central Tennessee into Saint Thomas Health, according to Ascension President and CEO Robert J. Henkel. Saint Thomas recently partnered with the University of Tennessee's primary care residency program, he said. Full story.

Anthem in July said it planned to buy Cigna for $54.2 billion in a deal that will reduce the former "Big Five" private health insurers to just three. Aetna had already announced a $37 billion deal to acquire Humana. If both deals are approved, Anthem, Aetna and UnitedHealthcare would stand as the largest insurers in the United States. Full story.

Public supply chain giant Cardinal Health in July wrapped up its acquisition of the Harvard Drug Group for more than $1.1 billion in cash from previous owner Court Square Capital Partners. Harvard Drug Group mainly distributes generic pharmaceuticals and pulled in more than $450 million in revenue in fiscal 2014. It employs 450 workers and manages two distribution facilities. Florida-based Larkin Community Hospital in June acquired Hollywood Pavilion Hospital and Hollywood Hills Nursing Home in Florida for $24.6 million. It was the second acquisition by Bolder in June. The company also acquired Avectus Healthcare Solutions, a leader in the coordination of third party liability accounts and workers' compensation accounts for hospitals and trauma centers. Parkview Adventist Medical Center in Maine filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June in a pre-packaged plan to combine with area provider Mid Coast Hospital, according to Mid Coast Health Services. Both hospitals are located in Brunswick, Maine. Full story.

New York University Langone Medical Center in June acquired Huntington Medical Group on New York’s Long Island region, giving patients at the newly-named NYU Langone Huntington Medical Group access to services system-wide, including at NYU Langone’s Manhattan hospital campuses and expanding network of ambulatory facilities. Pennsylvania post-acute care provider Genesis HealthCare on Monday said it will buy 24 skilled nursing facilities, as well as the contract rehabilitation business, from Revera Inc. for $240 million. Full story.

CVS Health, the nation’s second largest pharmacy benefits manager and pharmacy health provider, is buying Target’s pharmacy and clinic businesses for $1.9 billion, taking over 1,600 pharmacies in 47 states. The company will rebrand them as “CVS/pharmacy” and operate them in a store-within-a-store model. Target’s nearly 80 walk-in clinic locations will be rebranded as CVS MinuteClinics, and CVS Health will open as many as 20 new clinics in Target stores within three years as part of the company’s goal to have 1,500 by 2017. For-profit giant Tenet Healthcare Corp. said it plans to sell the 365-bed St. Louis University Hospital to St. Louis University, ending a 17-year relationship where Tenet ran the hospital in partnership with the university. Meridian Health and Hackensack University Health Network in New Jersey in May announced plans to merge, creating one of the largest health networks in the state. Lancaster General Health, which generated nearly $1 billion in 2014 revenue, will join the University of Pennsylvania Health System, the healthcare providers announced in late April. Ambulatory surgery center operator Nobilis Health Corp. in April said it will acquire the Victory Healthcare Houston Hospital for $2.4 million. The deal gives Nobilis control over the 25-bed surgical hospital, which had been run by Victory Healthcare. The transaction is expected to close mid-year. UnitedHealth Group, the nation’s largest insurer, in March said it would acquire Catamaran, the country’s fourth-largest pharmacy benefits manager, for $12.8 billion. Massachusetts healthcare giant Partners HealthCare closed on its deal to buy the Harbor Medical Associates, a physicians group with 70 members. The doctors will join Brigham and Women's Hospital's own physician group in 2016. The deal has raised concerns by state officials that it will enable Harbors to raise rates, but Partners said it will not will green-light any increases for Harbor above inflation for at least five years.

Tampa, Florida-based Greystone Healthcare Management Corp. in March said it acquired Autumn Health Care’s 10 skilled nursing facilities in Ohio in a move that grows its network of healthcare facilities, home health agencies and hospice care services. Monetary terms were not disclosed. Full story.

Tampa-based Carter Validus Mission Critical REIT II in March said that it acquired the Overland Park, Kansas-based Heartland Rehabilitation Hospital property for $24.5 million. The 45-bed in-patient rehabilitation facility will be leased to Post-Acute Medical, which runs rehabilitation, long-term and acute hospitals in Texas and Louisiana.

Pharmaceuticals company Concordia Healthcare on Monday said it has agreed to pay $1.2 billion to acquire the drug portfolio of Covis Pharma. The deal would put 18 branded and generic drugs under the the control of Concordia, a Canada-based firm known for its ADHD-treatment drug, Kapvay.

Healthcare consulting giant Navigant Health in February said it would acquire RevenueMed, an Atlanta-based provider of coding, revenue cycle management, and business process management services, for an undisclosed sum. The Chicago-based Navigant said it bought the company to have access to RevenueMed's software for back-office and financial management.

St. Louis-based healthcare provider Ascension Health in February said will acquire U.S. Health and Life Insurance Co. for $50 million, according to documents filed with the Michigan Department of Financial and Insurance Services, a move that boosts its services in population health. Full story.

Nashville-based healthcare workforce management company HealthStream in Febriary said it will acquire competitor HealthLine, of San Diego, for $88 million in cash. Full story.

The Illinois-based Alexian Brothers Health System in February announced plans to acquire the Chicago-based Medical Care Group, the latest instance of a large health system buying up physician practices. Monetary terms of the deal were not announced.

The deal brings a total of 20 physicians to Alexian, a move the hospital said will help it shore up its ranks of doctors ahead of a predicted physician shortage. It will also add reach to its population health plan, which pairs patients with its narrow network of doctors. Alexian Brothers Medical Group now will include 74 physicians and 24 practices as a result of the deal.

Farmingdale, New York surgical supply firm Misonix in February said it acquired back the rights to sell its BoneScalpel device from Aesculap, which previously held a 3-year contract to sell the bone scalpels to a select number of healthcare providers.

Texas-based Supply chain management company VHA in early February said it will merge with UHC, creating a single healthcare services company that ranks it among the largest in the nation. Monetary terms of the deal, or the name of the new entity, was not announced. Full story.

Electronic health records giant Cerner Corp. in early February closed on it its $1.3 billion merger with Siemens Health Services, a deal expected to add up to $5 billion in revenue to its balance sheet. The companies expect to invest $50 million into the business in the next three years. Full story.

Tennessee- based LifePoint Hospitals closed on its acquisition of Roaring Spring, Pennsylvania's Nason Hospital, a deal that made the hospital part of the region's Conemaugh Health System. LifePoint will invest $8.5 million in capital improvements in Nason in the next 10 years, under terms of the deal. LifePoint also paid off Nason's debt, and converted the hospital to a local taxpayer.

Public hospital owner Community Health Systems in January said it would take an 80 percent stake in Metro Health in Wyoming, Michigan. Tennessee-based Community Health said the majority equity interest would include Metro's 208-bed hospital and its outpatient centers. The deal needs regulatory approval in Michigan before closing. Community Health said the acquisition gives it an entry into the Michigan market.

While this acquisition was announced last year, shareholders for home health services company Gentiva Health approved its takeover by Louisville-based Kindred Health in January, setting a closing date of Feb. 2. Kindred ultimately paid $720 million for Gentiva, or $14.50 per share, after being forced to raise its initial bid by Gentiva shareholders. The newly combined company will be one of the largest healthcare firms in the country, running acute-care hospitals, home health services and inpatient rehabilitation among other things.

Global pharmaceutical giant Merck in January closed on its deal to acquire specialty drug company Cubist Pharmaceuticals for about $8.4 billion, or $102 per share. The takeover was announced in December 2014, but faced hurdles when a federal judge ruled that competitors could market generic versions of Cubist's antibiotic drug, Cubicin.

Colorado-based Envision Healthcare Holdings in January said it would buy two physician groups located at opposite ends of the country: Emergency Medical Associates of Parsippany, New Jersey, and Scottsdale Emergency Associates in Phoenix. Though terms of the deal were not announced, Envision said the acquisition would add $300 million in annual revenue to the business.

Trustees for the New York state-run Stony Brook University Hospital in January approved the hospital's merger with Southampton Hospital, a small facility catering to the swank Hamptons area on Long Island. The organizations originally announced their intent to merge in 2012. Under the deal, Southampton leased its facilities to Stony Brook and workers in Southampton will remain in their current labor union.

Healthcare services giant Kindred Healthcare closed on its $195 million purchase of Centerre Healthcare Corp., a manager of 11 inpatient rehabilitation hospitals.
