Made with limes instead of lemons, this refreshing Brazilian lemonade recipe (also known as Swiss lemonade) is the ultimate summer beverage. It's actually closer to a limeade than a lemonade in flavor. You'll need just a handful of ingredients and a blender to whip up a big batch. We'll walk you through how to make Brazilian lemonade including our number one tip for removing any bitter flavor in the finished drink. You'll need a blender and fine-mesh sieve to make a batch at home.

Brazilian Lemonade Ingredients

Unlike classic lemonade, Brazilian lemonade with made with whole limes and condensed milk for sweetness. It's richer and creamier than traditional lemonade.

  • Limes: When you get to the grocery store, it's important to choose the juiciest limes possible. Choose limes that are on the smaller side and are heavy for their size. Give the lime a little squeeze with your thumb; the skin should be relatively smooth and should have a little give when pressure is applied. If the skin feels thick or too bumpy, the lime won't have as much juice, the juice may be more bitter, and there will be more rind than you'd want for a drink such as this.
  • Sweetened Condensed Milk: Condensed milk is cow's milk with the water content removed. It's often sweetened with sugar. It's thick and creamy. Do not substitute evaporated milk in this recipe. It will not have the same texture or flavor.
  • Salt: Don't skip the salt! A little of salt helps remove any lingering bitterness from the lime peel. Add some to the whole batch and a pinch to each glass if the drink tastes too bitter.

How to Customize Brazilian Lemonade

Brazilian lemonade with condensed milk is the perfect starting point for a number of refreshing summer sips. To make a Brazilian lemonade cocktail, try adding a shot of rum, tequila, or flavored liqueur to each glass. If you prefer your lemonade less sweet, dial back on the sugar and condensed milk. Just know the finished drink may be more bitter. Garnish the drink with fresh lime, orange, or lemon slices, or add a few sprigs of fresh mint.

Ingredients

  • 3 limes, washed well and quartered

  • 3 cups water

  • 1/3 cup sugar

  • 1/4 cup sweetened condensed milk

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (optional)

  • Ice cubes

Directions

  1. In a blender, combine lime quarters, water, sugar, and sweetened condensed milk. Cover and blend until smooth.

  2. Pass mixture through a fine mesh sieve into a small pitcher. If mixture is bitter to taste, stir in salt. Serve over ice.
