EW Grobbel announces plans for a new grocery store and deli at Eastern Market

EW Grobbel, the 138-year-old food company well known for its corned beef and other gourmet foods, announced plans for a new grocery store and deli in Eastern Market this year.

Grobbel's Gourmet Fresh Neighborhood Market and a Sy Ginsberg-branded Jewish-style deli restaurant will be at 2456 Market Street where Eastern Market Seafood used to be. The longstanding seafood market closed in February 2020 when the owner retired.

Both new concepts will stretch from Market Street to Riopelle. Overall operations will cover two floors at nearly 4,500 square feet each. The grocery store entrance will be on the Market Street side, neighboring Vivo's and DeVries & Co.  Entering the deli will be on the Riopelle side. The new deli is near neighboring Eastern Market Brewing Co. and Detroit City Distillery. 

EW Grobbel is a fifth-generation, family-owned business in the Eastern Market area. 

“We are very excited to bring this new food oasis to 2456 Market Street where we can make high-quality food accessible to people right where they live, work and play,” said Jason Grobbel, president at EW Grobbel, in a news release. “The Grobbel team is committed to our hometown, the City of Detroit, by serving its residents and visitors with the best possible food offerings and experiences they could receive.”

Grobbel's expects to partner with local farmers to bring fresh food and produce to the market, according to a news release.  Other market offerings are several locally known brands, including Topor's Pickles, Corridor Sausage and Grobbel's Gourmet smoked meats. There will also be a line of prepackaged deli products and typical grocery store items such as bread and grab-and-go items. The store is expected to have extended flexible hours.

Globally known and Detroit-based EW Grobbel and FIRM Real Estate partnered on the ownership of the property.  FIRM Real Estate has been buying up property in Eastern Market since 2017.

“The FIRM Real Estate team is thrilled to be part of Grobbel’s commitment to the district and neighborhood residents,” said Sanford Nelson, president of FIRM Real Estate in a news release. “This immersive food experience is a solution to current shortcomings of Detroiters being able to find produce and fresh food nearby, year-round.”
