While running a business consists of so many different concerns, from finding ways to increase your profit to making the most of your limited resources, the most important resource every single business has is their employees. Our employees are a wealth of knowledge if we allow them the freedom to develop themselves. And when we are bound by targets and deadlines the opportunity to let them spread their wings is hard to come by. But when we are very keen on encouraging our employees to educate themselves further are there any ways that we can do this in the workplace?
Constant Exposure To Information
Learning doesn’t have to be a direct engagement with a subject matter. We can underestimate the importance of osmosis or surrounding employees with important information. It could be about guiding streaming services in the breakout room allowing your employees the opportunity to watch or play certain things. You have to remember that it’s a good idea to get a VPN with fast downloads so your work computers don’t slow down. But we have to remember that exposing our employees to information through various mediums can help to get the point across.
Building In Learning Breaks
While giving them information through subversive ways is one approach you may want to be liminal, rather than subliminal. Building in learning breaks gives your employees the opportunity to develop on the things that they think are important. When there are so many deadlines around it can seem impossible to build in any sort of learning break. But even 15 minutes on a Friday afternoon is that perfect opportunity to allow your employees a little bit of development time. Take inspiration from the bigger companies that encourage employees to have time off to develop themselves. It doesn’t seem like an investment upfront, but it is.
Align The Interests With The Skill
If your employees have a specific interest that can be applied to the workplace this isn’t just a way for your business to develop, it’s a way to get your employees actively engaged in the subject matter. Look at what they enjoy or what goals they have and see how it can benefit the business. A very good example is learning a language. If you’re looking to develop your business overseas, your employee that has a smattering of French or Spanish can be the start of a fruitful working relationship.
Encourage Collaboration
One of the simplest ways to help a company progress is to encourage collaboration. When we all work individually and our paths never cross a company doesn’t improve. Encouraging collaboration isn’t just a way to get people to work together but it’s a combination of different approaches and attitudes. When people see it from another perspective it can open them up in another way. Learning a different skill or approach to work can make it fresher.
If we can encourage autonomous, self-sufficient employees this will be a direct investment in our most important resource. Rather than focusing on deadlines and breeding a group of sheep, think about encouraging your employees to develop themselves in various ways around the office.
