Did You Hear?

As safety, equity and sustainability regarding the region’s infrastructure needs in Northern Virginia and beyond continue to rapidly evolve, the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority invites the public to provide feedback on what regional transportation focus areas you’d like to see in 2022 and how to best tackle traffic congestion in the region, through a multimodal approach.

Interested in sharing your feedback with Members of the Authority? Pre-register to provide live comment during the Annual Organizational Meeting on Thursday, January 13, 2022, beginning at 7 p.m. and concluding when the last public comment is provided. Opportunities for public comment are provided through in-person, written submission, and voicemail recording options and will be accepted through January 11, 2022 at 5 p.m. ET.

All comments received by the submission deadline will be read or played aloud for the Members of the Authority during the Organizational Meeting.

A Look Around the Region

On December 15th, the public was invited to learn more about the regional collaboration it takes to keep travelers in Northern Virginia moving. The Annual Northern Virginia Joint Transportation Meeting was co-hosted by the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority, Commonwealth Transportation Board, Virginia Department of Transportation, Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation, Office of Intermodal Planning and Investment, Northern Virginia Transportation Commission, and Virginia Railway Express. Nearly 100 people attended this year's virtual event.

Following agency presentations, two elected officials - City of Falls Church Council Member David Snyder (also Vice-Chair of the Authority) and Prince William County Occoquan District Supervisor Kenny Boddye - and 14 NoVA residents, provided live public comment. All written submissions, and those submitted via voicemail, are due on January 7, 2022.

Common themes during the public comment portion of the program, included:
  • Climate change and addressing greenhouse gases
  • Electrification of infrastructure
  • Support for transit including Bus Rapid Transit
  • Bike and pedestrian facilities/infrastructure offering safer commutes
  • Multimodal approach
  • Reduction of single occupancy vehicles (SOVs)

On December 8th, the Dulles Area Transportation Association (DATA) hosted a Post-Election Legislative Roundtable discussion for association members. Panel participants included Authority Members, Senator Jennifer Boysko, District 33, Virginia Senate; Jeffrey C. McKay, Chairman, Fairfax County Board of Supervisors; and Ann B. Wheeler, Chair, Prince William County Board of Supervisors, as well as Matthew Letourneau, Dulles District Supervisor, Loudoun County Board of Supervisors.

The timely discussion on transportation issues and projects impacting the region was moderated by Adam Tuss, NBC4 anchor and transportation reporter. Everything from the importance of transit and multimodal solutions in place to help people get to their homes faster, Silver Line Phase II, pedestrian/bicyclist safety, electrification of infrastructure, restoration of funds to the Authority, and the importance of regional collaboration to keep NoVA moving, were discussed.
