Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the critical care multi professional team as a Band 3 rehabilitation assistant.

Under the instruction of the qualified Therapists (Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy, Speech and language therapy, and dietetics) you will assist in carrying out care and exercise programmes with patients in a manner that respects people's abilities, privacy, dignity and individuality.

Duties to include:

Assisting qualified therapy staff to carry out delegated duties on direct / indirect patient care within the critical care setting, general household tasks ,general administration clerical, and data collection task

To liaise regularly with the qualified Therapists regarding treatment progression and on-going care. Reporting to Therapists any lack of progression or negative changes in patients ability to undertake treatment session.

To work as a member of the therapy team and multidisciplinary team, sharing information with team members.

To receive and prepare patients for therapy treatments and assist in maintaining a safe bedside environment for therapy to occur in.

The successful candiate will be guided through a set of competencies to support their learning and development in this innovative role.

Main duties of the job

Working as part of the multi disciplinary team of physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and dieticians to assist the team with the delivery of high quality , patient centred care to critically ill patients , on the critical care unit at the Royal Liverpool hospital site.

Assisting with exercise programmes, personal care activities ,relaxation and daily orientation activities, supporting patients with eating/drinking , creating and making resources for use on critical care e.g. communication boards, and assisting with supporting patients with swallow rehabilitation programmes.

Communicating with patients, carers and all other health and social care professionals regarding aspects of patient care, providing and receiving complex information which requires empathy and reassurance, communicating where there may be barriers to understanding.

Physiotherapy Key responsibilities:

To assist qualified staff with mobilisation, exercise and rehabilitation programmes for individual patients.

To perform prescribed exercise programmes with patients.

To enable patients to maintain or improve their mobility by the use of individualised therapy plans, as per whiteboards and rehabilitation folders.

Dietetics Key responsibilities:

To assist qualified Dietician/nursing staff in carrying out anthropometric measurements.

To assist in maintaining stocks of oral nutritional supplements and enteral feeds.

To assist in the collection of data e.g. volume based feeding

To work as a member of the Dietetic team and multidisciplinary team, sharing information with team members.

To help with the communication and handover of dietetic plan for patients transferred to the ward to ensure continuity of care.

To assist patients in ordering from menu at mealtimes including use of communication aids such as picture menus as needed.

To liaise with occupational therapies for adapted utensils at meal times.

To maintain menu folder on unit and ensure all menus are available as needed e.g., gluten free, renal, modified texture, allergy.

Occupational Therapy Key Responsibilities:

To assist with personal care tasks with patients.

To assist with prescribed relaxation sessions including guided imagery and retrograde massage.

To assist with the moving and handling of patients during rehabilitation sessions.

To assist/support patients with daily orientation and cognitive tasks as directed by the Occupational Therapists

To assist with function based upper limb activities

To assist with Oedema and tone management including positioning, passive stretches and retrograde massage

Speech and Language Therapy Key Responsibilities:

To assist with preparing appropriate food and drink for bedside swallow assessment.

To assist with supporting patients with eating/drinking during bedside swallow assessments.

To assist in delivering Fibreoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) assessments such as cleaning equipment (as per SLT protocol), preparing suitable food/drink, assisting patients with eating/drinking during assessment.

To assist in creating and making resources for use on critical care e.g. communication boards.

To assist with supporting patients with swallow rehabilitation programmes.
