Why this petition matters

We the people of California are outraged about the amount of unarmed victims that have been killed by officers as well as the numerous cases of excessive force that have been documented.

We want laws that support honorable officers while also holding officers accountable for their actions when needed.

California’s elected officials are working in Sacramento right now to address police accountability issues but they need our help to make sure these bills get passed.

Sign this petition and tell our elected officials you want them to continue the fight for these police accountability bills:

AB 86 (Assemblymember Kevin McCarty) - This bill would require an independent investigation of peace officer-involved shootings and other uses of force resulting in death.

SB 227 (Senator Mitchell) - This bill would prohibit the confidential grand jury proceedings that involves a shooting or use of excessive force by a peace officer that led to the death of a person being detained or arrested by the peace officer.

AB 71 (Assemblymember Freddie Rodriguez) - This bill would create a statewide database of statistics on all officer-involved shootings that result in the injury or death of an individual or a peace officer. Currently, there is not a national or statewide database.

SB 11 (Senators Beal and Mitchell) - This bill would require increased training of law enforcement officers to recognize, deescalate, and refer persons with mental illness or intellectual disability who are in crisis.

AB 953 (Assemblymember Shirley Weber) - This bill would prohibit law enforcement officers from engaging in that practice of “racial profiling”. Bill would also require the Attorney General to establish the Racial and Identity Profiling Advisory Board (RIPA) to improve diversity and racial sensitivity in law enforcement.

**If you would like to be more specific about which bills you support (or don’t support) you can do so in the comments section.

If passed, these bills will help increase levels of accountability amongst officers and take steps towards rebuilding the trust and support between the community and the officers who serve the community.
