The Australian Sketchbook by S.T.G. (detail), ST Gill, 1864–65, Hamel & Ferguson

Hello

Step back in time to colonial Australia in our new winter exhibition premiering Friday 17 July. Australian Sketchbook: Colonial life and the art of ST Gill will be the first major retrospective of Australia’s most popular mid-19th century artist, who created some of the most memorable images of urban and rural life in colonial Australia.

See more than 200 paintings, drawings, watercolours and prints that depicted Australia with great insight, and captured the social hierarchies and hypocrisies that Gill saw around him.

Presented in partnership with the National Library of Australia, the exhibition is complemented by a new publication, a diverse program of talks and guided tours, and a series of satellite exhibitions across regional Victoria.
