The Transplants

Science Fiction & Fantasy

When Rion and Sena, two refugees frrom a doomed planet travel across the galaxy to Earth to save their species from extinction, they land at sea and are separated in a hurricane. He washes up on the coast of Georgia. Sena is rescued at sea and taken to Australia. Pursued by an obsessed NASA official, The FBI and foreign intelligence services, They find each other, evade and escape capture. It's a scifi story, an adventure story, a love story and a story about how the first human contact with extraterrestrial intelligent life changes everyone involved.

Book Bubbles from The Transplants

The Porsche Rally

The idea of a space alien driving a Porsche 911 Turbo S in a sports call rally may seen a bit of a stretch, but I used the rally as a vehicle, pardon the pun, to demonstrate that every day Rion was on Earth he became more like a human and less like a space alien.

The Diamonds

Diamonds are a space aliens best friend. If you were sending two people off in suspended animation to a planet on the other side of the galaxy, what things of value would you give them to use as barter? Diamonds are a safe bet. They may be rare, but they exist on planets throughout the Universe, brought there by meteors.

Sena

Rion's mate Sena a beautiful, intelligent woman, was comfortable with herself and the choices she had made. She paired with Rion because they shared a common vision about their future and the future of Auria. When that future was destroyed by the pending collision of Auria with an errant moon of a neighboring planet, she accepted their pending doom content with the seven happy years they had together. When the were chosen to save their species, she did her duty as an Aurian and went into space with Rion on a journey to an unknown destination. She was an exceptional woman on Auria and becomes an exceptional woman on Earth.

Rion

Rion, warrior turned spacecraft design engineer, is the principal protagonist in "The Transplants." Along with his mate Sena, he must build a spacecraft capable of indefinite interstellar travel and cross the galaxy with Sena in suspended animation, leaving their ultimate destination to sensors aboard the spacecraft. The odds against the success of their mission are incalculable. He and Sena could not know that the people on the planet they would land on would challenge their belief system and those of everyone that knew who they were.

Robin Kelly

Every billionaire has his chief of staff. Usually its a nondescript, no-nonsense professional who does the billionaire's bidding. Lleyton Stuart's chief of staff is a beautiful, fiery red head named Robin Kelly who stands up to Lleyton Stuart when she believes he's wrong.

Lleyton Stuart

Billionaires range from recluses like Howard Hughes was for the last years of his life to the ubiquitous like Donald Trump. Lleyton Stuart tends toward the Howard Hughes end of the spectrum without the paranoia or the fear of diseases. He spends a great deal of his time on his super yacht, the “Lady Blue,” cruising around the world with beautiful women and his personal staff, running his extensive business enterprises from its command center. Lleyton is an honest man and a straight-up businessman, but like people with a seemingly unending stream of money, he’s not above bending the law when it suits his purpose.

Noel Smith

I chose an FBI agent experienced in counterespionage as Rion and Sena's principal pursuer because I wanted a character especially good at finding people pretending to be something they aren't. Other characters in the book are composite characters based on different real and imagined people. Only Noel Smith is based on a real person who was one of America's top counterespionage operatives.

Dr. Emma Harris

Doctors who specialize on working in trauma centers and emergency rooms are a special breed of doctor. They're like combat surgeons in the field. The injuries and pain they must deal with is impossible to describe to anyone who hasn't experienced it. Emma Harris is an outstanding doctor and an exceptional woman. Rion was most fortunate that he ended up in her care.

James Murdock

In every government bureaucracy there's at least one obsessed executive. When that bureaucracy is the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) the obsession can be about anything in the Universe. James Murdock's obsession is proving intelligent life exists on other planets. When he believes intelligent beings from another planet have arrived on Earth, he 's willing to give up everything to encounter it.

The Characters

Novels, of course, are all about the characters. "The Transplants has 3 principal male characters and 3 principal female characters. One of them is a Chinese woman named Helen Yang. I'll talk about the other five in future bubbles.

What would they believe?

Would space aliens that look like us share our human values. Would they believe in God? Would they share our code of moral ethics? Would they love each other as we love others? I wrote “The Transplants” because I wanted to explore these questions while entertaining readers and motivating them to think about what they believe in and how they might react if they encountered Rion and Sena. Perhaps the passage from “The Transplants” that best exemplifies what I mean is Rion’s exchange with Father Harris, who doesn’t know who Rion really is.

The Love Story

The principle genre for “The Transplants” is SciFi; interstellar travel dictates that. However, you’ll discover that the novel is more about the relationship between two human-looking aliens, their efforts to understand Earth’s cultures and beliefs and their odyssey across two continents as they are pursued by an obsessed NASA official, the FBI and foreign intelligence services. Arrival

Many science fiction stories begin with aliens fleeing a doomed planet and traveling to earth; however they routinely use faster than light travel to get here. I chose to transport Rion and Sena at a speed within the existing laws of physics to make "The Transplants" more science and less fiction.
