Dear MUSC Health Patients and Families,
We are all saddened to hear the news that 19 children and 2 teachers were senselessly killed in the massacre in Uvalde, Texas. Our hearts go out to the families impacted by this tragedy, and we grieve for you in this moment. To honor the victims of the massacre, we have gone dark on our social media channels until now. During these times it is simply difficult to even know what to say or do.
As caregivers of children, our MUSC Health and MUSC Children’s Health care team members' hearts are broken for the families affected. Life is precious, and our mission to preserve and optimize human life certainly puts us at odds with anyone who threatens this precious gift with the violence we all saw as this tragedy unfolded.
The National Mass Violence Victimization Resource Center at the Medical University of South Carolina’s Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences receives funding from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office for Victims of Crime to support individuals impacted by mass violence. You can find more support resources by following this link.
Please reach out to us if you need support. In addition, a list of support resources compiled by the National Mass Violence Victimization Resource Center is included below this message.
In the coming days, I would encourage everyone to honor and remember individuals who are victims of violence, including the families in Uvalde. Perhaps you hug your loved ones a bit tighter, show more patience and kindness to others and do good with the precious gift of life we are given.
Yours in health,
Patrick J. Cawley, MD
