The Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies (CRSES) together with GeoSun Africa successfully moved the Bloemfontein solar station from the University of Free State (UFS) to the Central University of Technology (CUT). This move was funded by the Eskom Power Plant Engineering Institute (EPPEI).
The solar station provides minute, hourly and daily averaged data and includes a solar tracker, which records solar irradiance, as well as an anemometer for recording wind speed and direction, a temperature sensor and a rain gauge. This data is sent to GeoSun for quality checking before being uploaded to the SAURAN (Southern African Universities Radiometric Network) website as free data to the public (www.sauran.net).
The installation of the station at CUT was very well supported by Prof. Vermaak and there was lots of interest shown by the students assigned to take care of the station. The CRSES has great confidence that CUT will host and maintain the station well.
