Jurassic World breaks records with biggest opening weekend in history

Move over, Avengers—there’s a new hero in town, and he’s a very different kind of super soldier.

Jurassic World surpassed even the most optimistic predictions and shattered domestic box office records with $208.8 million during its opening weekend, Universal has confirmed. That number pushes it past the $207.4 million record previously set by Joss Whedon’s superhero blockbuster, which has held the mantle of highest overall movie opening since 2012. The action-adventure, starring Chris Pratt and a gaggle of CG dinosaurs, also set a new record with a $524.4 million haul globally.

The latest installment in the Jurassic Park franchise, produced for $150 million by Universal and Legendary, opened on 4,274 North American theaters, the widest release in studio history. To say that Universal is having a good year would be an understatement: Furious 7 topped the $1 billion mark globally earlier this year, while Pitch Perfect 2 posted the highest movie musical opening ever with $70.3 million and 50 Shades of Grey dominated the box office in February with the biggest Valentine’s Day debut. As a result, the studio set records for the fastest to reach the $1 billion mark at the domestic box office and the fastest studio to surpass $3 billion worldwide in one calendar year. And with the release of Ted 2 later this month and Minions set to hit theaters in July, there’s no doubt that the studio will be looking at even more milestones.

While Chris Pratt has confirmed that he’ll be back for more dinosaur adventures, no sequel plans have officially been announced… yet. We’re willing to bet that, like those raptors, the announcement’s just around the corner.
