Crafty Cow to open in deli of Bay View's Bumstead

The Beast, a mozzarella-stuffed burger topped with prime rib and onion rings, is one of the burgers at Crafty Cow, a craft beer bar in Oconomowoc. A second location will open in half of Bumstead Provisions, the sandwich shop at 2671 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.

Crafty Cow, the Oconomowoc craft beer and burger spot, will open a second location in the deli of Bumstead Provisions in Bay View.

The change is due in early spring, according to an announcement from the owners.

Mike Bodow, co-owner with Devin Eichler and Dave Eichler, said Milwaukee customers' interest in Crafty Cow but reluctance to drive 45 minutes to Oconomowoc led to the change.

Bumstead still will sell deli meats and other grocery items, but the racks for groceries will go, and tables, a bar and TVs will be added to the deli area at 2675 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.

"We have all this space," Bodow said. "We can still sell all of our items and add Crafty Cow."

Customers will be able to order from either the Crafty Cow menu or the Bumstead menu anywhere in the restaurant. (The two sides are connected by a doorway; each side has its own entrance, with Bumstead's being at 2671 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.) The two will have the same list of draft beers.

The menu largely will be the same as the Oconomowoc restaurant's, Bodow said, but Bay View will have several additions with ingredients from Milwaukee purveyors. Proceeds from sales of those four burgers are to benefit various Milwaukee charities; details will come later, according to an announcement about the change.

Many of the burgers on the menu are stuffed Juicy Lucy-style burgers.

The deli likely would be closed for about three days shortly before the changeover, Bodow said.

Crafty Cow will open for lunch at 11 a.m. weekdays, and brunch will start at 10 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
