Here's what I've been thinking about in

June.

I spent a large portion of May as sick as a dog. Like wearing-a-mask-not-to-infect-others sick. But May ended better for me, with a change of role in my company (more on that later) and an impromptu trip to Malta for my new team's meetup.

Malta was a discovery! I hadn't given the tiny country much thought but now I am plotting to get back there sooner rather than later. The mix of Italian and Arabic influences comes through in both their language and in their food, lending it a sense of exoticness and familiarity all in one shot. The header image is a shot of the bay, and I'll be posting more pictures soon.

Left Brain: On technology, business, productivity, and self:
  • A great post on managing access to yourself and how social media and all these communication channels cause us anxiety. I agree with her, and for the record I am very available but I prefer email to be the channel people outside of close friends and family contact me on. I think boundaries are sane and necessary.
  • How Successful People Work Less and Get More Done has some interesting tips but the important part is actually working fewer hours - if you don't do that, you're not working less.
  • You might have a bucket list about doing things, but what about a moral bucket list, about being? Interesting read from the NYT.
  • I was once in debt; now I've been debt-free for 11+ years, and I plan never on having debt again. I still use a credit card, but there are those who say we shouldn't use them at all, and here's why: Against Credit Cards.

My One Thing: Balanced

I mentioned this app in a previous newsletter, but I'm really loving Balanced.

Billed as "life improvement made simple" it's a very easy-to-use graphic set of reminders with a frequency you set/control. They give you 50 suggested activities but you can create your own as well. As an activity comes "due" it moves up higher in the list and you can see your completion rate for each activity by clicking on it (my blogging one is suffering compared to others).

I encourage you to use it not for things you're already doing, but things you'd like to be sure you're doing more often. That's the balance in Balanced that I take away from it and use it as a tool to encourage me to stretch myself a bit further in directions I say I want to, but perhaps am not always able to. Get Balanced (free) for iOS (after playing with the free version for a while, I paid for the upgrade). They also just released Productive which focuses more on daily habits.
