So You’ve Slept In Your Make-Up Again. Here’s What To Do So You Don’t Get A Breakout

You fell into bed with a face full of make-up. Here's a three step plan to undo the damage.

Woman with a hangover

We’ve all been told a million times how important it is to take our make-up off before bed but when the land of nod calls our name sometimes it just doesn’t allow time for cleansing, toning or moisturising, and we fall into bed with eyeliner, foundation and mascara still intact.

So, instead of lecturing you about premature aging, clogged pores and a dull complexion, which are all caused by going to sleep with a face full of slap, we thought we’d get proactive, and execute a three step plan to combat the effects of snoozing with your make-up on.

Cleanse

First up, you’ll need to get your skin squeaky clean by double cleansing the next morning.   The bad news? Your trusty make-up wipes just won’t cut it “Make-up wipes are not a substitute for proper cleansing,” warns dermatology clinical nurse Selene Daly. “And using a very stringent cleanser is not a good idea either as it destroys new skin cells.”

Instead, you’ll need to opt for an oil-free make-up remover like Benefit’s Remove It to lift away pimple-causing dirt and grime. Swipe it over the skin twice to ensure you dissolve all surface dirt and debris.

Wash

Still not feeling squeaky clean? Use a foaming cleanser to get deep down into your pores and follow up with a deep cleansing mud mask to draw out those extra impurities. For irritated skin, pop on a a hydrating mask like Clarins HydraQuench Cream-Mask to soothe any irritation. A warning though; be gentle when towel drying the skin so you don’t irritate it further. The rule? Pat, don’t rub. It’s much kinder.

Hydrate

Finally you’ll need to combat any dryness or discomfort left behind from wearing your make-up all night. “Follow up with a moisturiser which contains AHA’s or glycolic acid,” instructs Selene. “It’s a great way to promote skin turn over.” For particularly flaky areas, use a facial oil like Good Things Argan Oil Perfecting Facial Oil for added hydration.

Lastly, if you can, skip wearing make-up for the day to give your skin a much needed breather.
