Governor's School returns to Radford University

Some of the state's finest high school students will take center stage again at Radford University as the Virginia Summer Residential Governor's Schools in the Humanities and the Visual and Performing Arts return to campus.

The month-long program began on June 28 and offer challenges and rewards of college-level work and life away from home for the young women and men in attendance. The program continues through July 25.

"Governor's School at Radford University [brings] the very best of Virginia's rising juniors and seniors to Radford University for a rigorous month-long college experience," said Paul Thomas, Radford Governor's School director and assistant professor of religious studies. "While here students will participate in a curriculum designed by Radford's excellent faculty and will be immersed in the best that Radford has to offer."

Since 2010, Radford University has hosted the program, which gives junior and senior high school students the opportunity to use their creativity in music, visual and performing arts and the humanities. Students choose the classes that most pique their interest from a varied curriculum taught by RU faculty members and guest instructors.

Visual and Performing arts students will spend the month honing their craft. Actors, dancers, musicians, artists and designers will have opportunities to take intensive workshops in their fields and show their work as the semester progresses.

Humanities students will have plenty of chances to stretch their imaginations and critical thinking skills. Classes range from “Ghosts and Other Spirits of the Dead,” a course that examines the role of the supernatural in culture, to "Political Engagement in the 21st Century," a survey of the way young people interact with politics and how engagement might be increased.

More information about course offerings can be found on the Radford University Governor's School website.
