DEED Awarded $5.75 Million Grant to Expand Job Training Initiative

~Grant will help train dislocated workers and current workers for in-demand jobs~

ST. PAUL – The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) was awarded a $5.75 million grant by the U.S. Department of Labor to help fund job training in high-growth sectors, including advanced manufacturing, agriculture, health care, information technology and transportation.

“As the state’s Baby Boomers exit the workforce, it is crucial that we have the ability to connect available workers to the skills they need to be successful,” said DEED Commissioner Katie Clark Sieben. “Additional funding will enable us to enhance services for dislocated and current workers who are looking to update their skills for in-demand fields.”

Grants totaling $138 million were awarded to 27 states and the Cherokee Tribal Nation through the Sector Partnership National Emergency Grant program.

In addition to enhancing services for the state’s dislocated workers, funds will also be used to increase opportunities for incumbent worker training for businesses and their employees and to further establish career pathways for job seekers.

While the grant will be administered by DEED, it will be implemented through collaborations between employers, educational institutions, local and statewide workforce development services and the Governor’s Workforce Development Council.

DEED builds on the state’s commitment to supporting dislocated workers and uses current industry-driven projects to help increase the level of employer participation in a variety of work-based training initiatives in the next five years.
