Hey all, Cameron here -

In keeping with efforts to be more communicative, here’s an update on what’s been happening over the past month or so…

In one exciting bit of news, Jef was out in LA at E3 last week, and says he spotted a few zombie related offerings, and he’ll hopefully do a round-up for us to share with you guys sometime soon.

There are two new missions headed your way in the next patch. Mission04 is nighttime in a ravaged small town - the undead are swarming, but the military has moved in and is heavily armed. Most recent progress, however, has been with Mission05, which actually started with a map that got built way back and was used in the game’s promo video.

Mission05 uses the same geometry and texture set that the current skirmish maps use, the Warehouse District set, but it was initially a lot smaller than the current missions. If you were with us from early on, you’ll remember that we went back, after our original alpha release, and doubled the size of the second and third missions. So we felt we needed to double down with Mission05, as well, and Jef stepped up to the plate on that front - expanding the street layout and props and lighting. We’ll be finalizing it this week, now that he’s back from E3, but fortunately he got it far enough along before heading to LA that a first pass at scripting is already under way.

Here’s a to-scale comparison between the current Mission02, the original Warehouse District map, and the new Mission05 - with the playable area of each outlined in red . . .

Martin has been continuing to refine the turret code, and it turns out there are a bunch of edge cases to be dealt with - especially for the manned version of the turret. When to operate the turret, when not to operate the turret, how to play nice with other humans who want to operate the turret . . . knowing to fight zombies in between you and the turret rather than just running into a mob of zombies while trying to get to the turret . . . a lot of situations to account for, and, more than likely, once we release this next patch, you guys will find even more edge cases that we’ve missed - but we’re getting close to having all the major ones covered.

Cameron (that’s me!) - well, I’ve mostly finished up the level scripting for m04, and I’m now working on a scripting pass for m05. That means laying in more hint nodes for the human AI, tweaking the navmesh, expanding the previous story pass, adding bonus goals, etc, etc.. Lately, I’ve also been working on the animation for humans to use the new machine gun turret, giving Martin testing and use case feedback on the turrets, and helping with tech review for the latest lighting passes.

Chris has been tracking down bugs and refactoring some of my hacked-in code so that it’s more useable and more robust. That’s something he (thankfully!) does fairly often. He’s also been providing code support for Gunnar’s audio efforts, and he’s gotten us ready to take advantage of some more of what Steam offers as a platform, as well - but the art team is lagging behind him on that front.

Chris has also started looking into migrating the project over to Unity5, which is something we’re all looking forward to (ooh! new toys!), but something that is going to take some doing. We’re hoping to make that transition for alpha1.17, and it looks fairly promising. Upgrading our Unity licenses required reinvesting some of the proceeds from Early Access sales so far, but we see that as a commitment to the game, and we’re looking forward to using the cool new tools available in Unity5 to make the game much better.

Gunnar has been working his audio wizardry, as always, and he has two more installments of his awesome radio play ready to go. He’s also put together two entirely new compositions for the background audio for missions 04 and 05, both of which are awesome. Oh, and did I mention the awesome level of awesomeness on display? Awesome! He’s also been working with Chris on improvements to the audio logic for the unit footsteps and gunfire.

Jameson has been adding more props to the Small Town maps, and has started to work on banging up the version of Small Town that gets used in m04. Eventually, we want that level to look like there’s been some apocalypse going down recently, with crushed walls and splattered remains and such.

Dave has been swamped with a lot of contract work recently (a good problem to have, it must be said), but we’re really looking forward to his upcoming work on concept art for trading card designs!

Cheers,

->Cameron

I'm really pleased to hear about the continued development of the game, I must admit I really thought it had been abandoned. Glad I was wrong.

Sweet, thanks for the update on progress, that was a treat to read. By chance do you think you guys could do like a biweekly update or so, if it's not too much trouble.

Sincerely looking forward to seeing what shennaigans I can get the zombies into.

@Zarnovski: Yeah, it's our fault for not communicating better, but things got very slow there for a while - and when you don't have time to work on the game, it's even harder to find time to talk about the game! We've already posted about why things got so slow - but suffice it to say that sleep schedules are beginning to normalize somewhat again around here, and so we're starting to build up a little more momentum.

@Archaic Scribe: Coolness - glad you liked it! We're going to try to do updates more often for sure. Biweekly would be sweet, and we'll try for that, but, honestly, once a month or so is probably more likely.
Glad to see there's been a update. I shall be pledging my support later this week :)

Personally I'd think an update once a month, about half way through would be great. Even if tech details are scarce, a few screenshots of items being worked on can go a long way.

Good to hear from you again! The maps look very promising. :)
Keep up the awesome work guys.

An update of the progress?? you really expect people to feed on this??? WE NEED real updates, not progress updates. I will keep flooding steam support until i to get my money back. More than a month ago, Dev told in another thread that an update was comming in a month... and all i see is "update of the progress" but no real update...8 months now without anything?
thanks for the info , tho.

Any word on the update?

Hello Devs...can we expect anythng further to be done on this game or is it dead??

As I said before, clearly no-one is even moderating this forum but I'm pretty sure the devs who are responsible for this sham are reading what people are writing.

They can't come back this time and plead they have no experience with PR, they are simply devs who can't seem to grasp the simple concept, that when you sell someone an unfinished product with the promise of finishing at some point in the future and then don't update or even communicate with their customers, people are going to get mad.

I don't believe they are that stupid, unfortunately.

The least they could have done, was to intergrate Steam Workshop but I don't think they will even bother to do that.

I just hope no-one buys this without reading some reviews. Steam should step in and remove this from the Steam Store and find out what the devs intend to do to this game, if anything.

I like to stick around on this form I am not a dev but I hope to POSSIBLY and I use that term losely see the devs post but like you said it proablably should be taken down but lets face it theres alot of games that need to be taken down so this one may not be taken to.

Some of you self entilted children who want to whine about early acess games need to grow up. My advice to you is stop putting your parents money into early acess games because you clearly dont have what it takes to stick it out while small companies like this one get things in order and things done. You whine you cry and beg for attention saying oh that should be fixed now. Welcome to the real world things take time and you wait.

One do you need to insult us to get a point across.
Two we are "Whining" because the people that make this cannot take about 2 minutes to sit down and say sorry we are unable to do anything for a while or sorry but we have to pospone an update. That would be fine instead steam users are in the dark for about 2 monthes while they say nothing. If you Carrell can find 2 minutes of free time to insult us "children" then why can the devs speak to us?
