Amazon Smile:

A Word from Our Executive Director,
Jan Campbell
Dear Friends,

Although Old Spanish Days (Fiesta) in Santa Barbara has come and gone - I wanted to tell a story about an event during that time that reminded me of how important it is for our clients and their children to get a bit of "normal" in their lives.

On the Saturday of Fiesta (after the Children's Parade), UBS staff, led by Karen Dalmau, put together a family picnic for all of our shelter clients and our staff at the Santa Barbara Mission Rose Garden. Fifty people came and celebrated the joy of community with a bar-b-que, water balloon toss (the kids' favorite) and a watermelon eating contest. Kids ran under a river of water from the coolers (in spite of protests from their moms), one of my board members landed a direct hit on my head with a water balloon, and we all shared stories and jokes.

In reflecting back, I realized that we were just another group of people hanging out having fun on a beautiful sunny day. We weren't victims, survivors, advocates, or donors...we were just normal people getting together to have some fun.

Too often, the people we serve don't have these opportunities - due to fear or isolation. I am so grateful to the UBS Staff who came up with the idea, to our staff who facilitated the transportation and organization, and to our clients who put aside their troubles and shared the joy of a summer day with all of us.

As we move into the fall, back to school and the holidays, my hope for our clients is more normal, more fun and more success on their journey to a violence-free life.

 All the best

Jan Campbell
