Banco de Chile taps Wincor Nixdorf for 500 extra-secure ATMs

The new units comply with a government mandate that calls for the replacement of every ATM in Chile with a more physically secure device by 2018.

Banco de Chile, the second largest financial institution serving the Chilean market, is replacing its ATMs with secure systems from Wincor Nixdorf. As part of this process, the bank has ordered an additional 500 Cineo ATMs, according to a press release.

The new machines will bring the bank a step closer to full compliance with a government decree issued in 2013. In response to rising numbers of physical attacks on ATMs, Chile's "Decreto 222" mandated the replacement of all ATMs with secure systems within five years.

Prior to its current order, Banco de Chile had replaced more than 550 existing units with extra-secure Wincor Nixdorf ATMs, the release said. With the installation of the new units, the Wincor Nixdorf service organization will continue to provide maintenance for the Cineo fleet.

The installations include HD video surveillance of the surroundings; additional cameras within the ATMs to monitor the customer panel and safes that are highly resistant to gas explosions and other physical attacks.

In the past year, criminals attempted three explosive attacks on the new systems, but came away with only a growing awareness that such attacks have become pointless, the release said.

"It's not primarily about protecting the cash in the systems, but preventing potential collateral damage from explosions," said Osvaldo René González García, director of security and risk prevention at Banco de Chile. "The security of our customers and staff has top priority for us."

Wincor Nixdorf's service organization maintains the installed base of systems and will take on maintenance for the new ones as well.
