After some research, these products look alike but have different guts. This particular one, (cost ~$9) has one chip therefore probably will not work for most situations as it did not work for me. I am going to look for the ones with 3 chips and see if those work. They are around $16.Update: Found the one with 3 chips and IT WORKS GREAT! On any device.

This works perfectly for adapting my new blu-ray disc player to my old analog input tube tv. I have seen some negative review for these devices and I believe the problem might be the USB power source. I purchased one rated at 24W / 2.4A & it worked fine; out of curiosity, I tried it again with an older USB power source I had on hand rated at 5V / 1A and all I got was sound, no picture. The one I purchased was RAVPower® 24W/DUAL 2.4A Foldable Plug Dual USB Travel Charger, hope this helps some people.

I've just been reviewing all of my orders back to 2014 (yah, DON'T ask!), when I saw this regrettable purchase. I bought mine on December 5, 2015 from a different seller (last review 2016-2-19, 23 total, 17% negative). When I clicked on the item in my order history, I was brought here. I read the first 30 negative reviews (as of 2018-12-19: 105 positive, 226 negative), and none gave the info which allowed me to find the good version that I later bought. So I felt compelled to help out anyone considering getting one.
I'm only going to discuss the product line and not individual units, meaning I'm not concerned with the quality control aspect, rather the actual hardware design. It so happens that both of my units were in proper working order (I noticed that many reviewers received dead ones), so I won't comment on DOA units.
The top critical review (by rstoamped) I read also deals only with the design aspect, and does this by visual inspection of the circuit board. I didn't open either of my units up, so I can't confirm or refute what was said. However, there was a photo with the review (although quite tiny) and the review seems competent so I'll include what I consider to be the "meat". The good version has 3 chips and the inferior one has only 1. I'm sure this had a significant impact on the production cost.

So here's the deal on the 2 versions: the rip-off version will only convert HDMI to composite AV (CVBS) when the digital source signal is already at the resolution which the analog device is capable of displaying. In other words, the video starts out in a digital format but only has the resolution of a standard definition (SD) signal. So the rip-off box only does a 1 to 1 conversion from digital to analog; it does no "scaling".
(Non- blu-ray) DVD player's have a maximum resolution of 720x480, which is 'pretty much' the same as a standard definition TV signal (my grasp of analog video starts to resemble voodoo at this point). and so any DVD player that has an HDMI output almost certainly does upscaling. Cable or satelite boxes provide programs in SD and so usually have analog outputs or do upscaling on their HDMI outputs. I didn't spend TOO much time Googling, but I found that SD signals over HDMI isn't very common.
So all of these things together is this why I found this converter to be a rip-off. There just aren't very many uses for it. The only way I was able to test that the rip-off box actually works was to use a computer. A PC will let you adjust the resolution by dragging that pointer all the way down to a humble standard definition (which pretty much is what a true VGA signal is: 640x480).

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A "GOOD" HDMI 2 AV CONVERTER BOX:
Getting ripped off is way to easy, not only when buying an item sight unseen over the internet, but even if you're doing it "brick'n'mortar" style (or perhaps ChevyTrunk'n'sidewalk style!). For me at least, the rip-off box came in a legitimate looking retail package which had "Full HD 1080p" proudly displayed on the front of the box, and whose instructions inside were EXACTLY the same as the instructions that came with my "good" HDMI 2 AV converter (which didn't come in retail packaging, just with the instruction "manual" in a bubble-pop mailer). Also, the "good" one was in a black plastic case with white printing and also had "UP scaler 1080P" below the "HDMI2AV" (even though it's actually a "down-scaler"). The rip-off box came in a white plastic case and had nothing below the black printing which said "HDMI2AV"

So there you have it; that's the skinny on these converters! (is anyone even buying these anymore?!)

Sorry to repeat myself, but I keep seeing the same complaints about this perfectly functional, and affordable product.

Purchased two of these and both work perfectly. I think other reviewers that are having bad luck are not using an ample power source. Many of my phone charging bricks did not provide enough power....once I found the correct power source, both have been working great for months.

I use one in our car to connect an HDMI Boxee Box to our roof mounted LCD and the other converts a Chromecast to give me RCA audio.

Connected my PC to this with an HDMI cable (and plugged into USB port for power with included cable), then connected a projector that only accepted RCA. Worked for a couple of minutes as I tried to adjust some settings, then quit. It made my PC monitor go blank. Unplugged the HDMI cable and the monitor came back on. Plugged HDMI back into PC, monitor went blank. Wiggled (all) the cables and the projector flickered a bit and let out some scratchy noises. Tapped on the little plastic box (converter) with same result. Unplugged again and ran a video on the PC. Plugged everything back in and as soon as the HDMI was plugged into the PC the monitor went blank. Unplugged the HDMI from the little white box and the PC Monitor came back on. Like a poster child for insanity, I disconnected everything and let it sit. Hoping by some miracle it healed itself, I tried everything again as before. This time though, I tried a different USB jack. Then another. Same result. Kept switching the PAL/NTSC switch thinking that may be the problem. No. Damn thing just didn't work, but for a few minutes. Back in the box and back to the seller.
