Wood’s Pond fishing clinic May 30

For The Spectrum & Daily News

The Division of Wildlife Resources and Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife (SFW) is offering a fishing clinic for anyone 17 or younger.

Heather Talley, regional wildlife recreation coordinator for the DWR, said: “We’ll teach you how to catch fish using both bait and lures. This year, if you’d like to learn how to fly fish, we’ll teach you how to do that, too. SFW will provide raffle prizes and lunch.”

After the instruction, it’ll be time to walk to Wood’s Pond and fish.

“If you don’t have fishing equipment, some will be provided for you,” Talley said.

Multiple volunteers will be available to help bait hooks and cast. SFW member Jason Aiken says “Members of the organization enjoy sharing their knowledge about hunting and fishing with others, especially youth. One of the best ways to learn how to do something is to gather knowledge from those who enjoy doing.”

Wood’s Pond is in Cedar Canyon and is easy to find. If driving from Cedar City, turn east on Center Street, which becomes state Route 14, after driving about 10 miles, you’ll see a “Woods Ranch” sign and some pavilions on the right side of the road.

“We’ll meet at the smaller pavilion for the beginning portion of the workshop. We’ll come back to the pavilion for lunch.” Talley said.

The clinic is from 9 a.m.-noon. The cost free.
