MONTREAL – Signs were on the minds of store owners during a council meeting in Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce Wednesday night.
Merchants insisted that some of the business signs in the borough are either cheap, rundown or distasteful.
“I think the correct approach is to get rid of these signs on post, which is a visible pollution. An eyesore,” said Michael Shafter, a merchant.
“One sign bigger than the next fighting for prominence, just overshadowing each other.”
As a result, the borough proposed a new bylaw that would restrict the types of signs allowed on a section of Côte-des-Neiges street.
The new bylaw would primarily affect a stretch of Côte-des-Neiges from Côte-Sainte-Catherine to Queen Mary streets.
Officials hope the change will give the street a more welcoming, village feel like on Monkland road or in Pointe-Claire.
“The bylaw actually invites all the merchants to increase the quality of signs,” explained city councillor Magda Popeanu.
“We want to see the merchandise, not huge signs.”
