Improper streetcar track construction delays TTC storage facility opening on Leslie

Part of Leslie Street in Toronto’s east-end will be closed until mid-July because a new stretch of streetcar track was installed about nine centimetres too high by mistake.

The construction, which was supposed to be finished by last fall, has closed a stretch of Leslie south of Queen Street for months.

The construction error involves 60 metres of improperly laid track between Queen Street and Eastern Street.

The construction is part of the TTC’s Leslie Barns “streetcar house” project.

The storage facility was already about a year behind schedule and some $90 million over budget before this latest issue.

The contractor said it’s responsible for the mistake and will be covering the costs of fixing it.

The Globe and Mail cites TTC CEO Andy Byford as saying the responsibility lies with the professional contractor and that the TTC inspectors aren’t on the job every hour of every day.
